Preferred Cases for various tasks
Preferred Cases for various tasks
Have done some reading here and there , but am wondering what the various preferences are for one’s doubles to be nested in. Also if you mind giving a brand or maker to put to these. This obviously covers several different case ideas for these different situations, just trying to start a convo on it.
1. Travel whether long distances across states where they need to be locked or air travel.
2. Going out to hunt or the range not crossing state lines ( where is matters or not)
3. An event where you might be in a showy mood.

Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
You ask a good question and I’m sure you’ll get a few different opinions. I prefer long cases made of a canvas type material. In my mind, they “breath” a little and hopefully they don’t trap moisture. I have a couple of cases that “unzip” all the way at the end. In fact the zipper actually opens around the end (muzzle). I really like this feature. If the case doesn’t open completely, there is usually a rubber or leather boot at the muzzle end. This style is most common, and not my favorite. If you have to push the muzzle into the end of the case, I fear that eventually the bluing will wear off. Oh, I’m also starting to prefer plastic zippers as opposed to metal. In my mind, they are less likely to scratch my treasured firearm.
I have owned two hard cases. Great for traveling, but that’s it. If I’m hopping from one hunting site to another, I really don’t like breaking down the gun, especially if there is moisture involved.
I would post pictures, but I’m currently on vacation. I eagerly await opinions from our comrades.

Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
I'll pretty much echo what Jeff says. I use soft cases for all travel in my vehicle, only breaking down my guns to clean them then reassemble them and into the safe they go inside of a silicon gun sock. I don't do air travel with my guns and haven't for many years. If I had to it would be in a vintage John Hall lockable hard case.
Owning a Fox is not a spectator sport.
Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
Based on my northeast location, moving across state borders frequently that require a hard locked case etc I have adopted a hybrid style for years.
Used the long hard cases, but they take up so much space and are a pain. Also have used the slip when around the hunting locations. Even with that though we tend to spot hop a bit and for observation sake , one has a non properly lodged forearm.
Now I’m thinking a breakdown case such as a Negrini $$$$$ or a Vendetti moto case for the ride to and then the Mud River Seat organizer with two gun slips for the easy in and out spot jumping. Not as visible and recognizable as a normal gun slip is across the back seat.

Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
Similar to folks above. I have a two-gun canvas long case for when I'm going any distance and might need a backup gun, and a single canvas long case for the range, etc. If I'm taking more than two I break them down into my old leg o' mutton cases; easier to pack and take up less room.

Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
When hunting I always use a silicon impregnated sock type case or a long zipper case. I have probably a dozen of them. I take my guns out assembled and try to do a quick cleaning to dry them and run a bore snake through them if conditions were bad.
I always fold the sock up or the zip case in half and leave it in plain sight so no one with bad intentions wants to break into my truck to see what is in the case.
I like hard cases in my gun room though. Most of my Foxes have leather cases, as do my Parker Reproduction, LC Smith Crown Grade, CSMC RBL's and Francotte. My Brownings have Browning cases. I have a nice leather Bianchi leg O' mutton type case with that I use from time to time also.

Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
Whatever case you find that turns you on. Best double gun cases are British oak and leather. USA cases for double guns, the Abercrombie and Fitch VC or very compact cases. They are leather covered trunk cases. Both of these examples are expensive. Holt's Auction is the best place to look for British cases. The Abercrombie and Fitch VC cases are buried deep in collections, usually with a gun inside. Canvas cases are made by Brady in the UK.
Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
Great information, I have noticed the cases at Holt’s and also have used Brady fishing bags for years, great quality. I would think with some of the vintage cases some would be getting them refinished if going that route to a degree.
So many lovely choices for short trips, longer trips, travel, and display.

Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
My wife gifted me the double case years ago; came from Galazan but I don't think they offer it anymore. The single case is from Browning...

I have the galazan case in a single gun version.
I got it for a real bargain at Hausemann‘s Hollow one year from Tony.

Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
I’ll throw my two cents worth in as well. For car/truck travel I like the Boyt quilted canvas break down cases. Offers the gun great protection in an inside environment and can be placed on the floor board neatly tucked away. I use these cases if I’m traveling w/guns for several days. If it’s a single day hunt I utilize a Boyt (or similar) single gun case.

I use the Boyd cases exclusively. There 54" shotgun case will handle my 36" 8 gauge guns. For duck hunting i use a floating canoe bag style case.

Re: Preferred Cases for various tasks
Same as Craig, I like Boyt cases for transport especially the gun sleeve type with opening/catch at one end, no zipper and with carry strap. My double guns are always assembled except during bore cleaning and renewal of the gun grease on the hinge pin, frame knuckle/forend iron interface, the bolt locking surfaces and on the barrel lug surface where the f/e iron bears. And while I know it's heresy to some, I have no use for take-down type cases including leg o muttons because the grease stains the case lining and attracts/retains dirt and grit while the disassembled gun is inside. All this is just my take on the OP’s question. frank

1. Travel whether long distances across states where they need to be locked or air travel.
For air travel and hunting trips etc. I prefer the Tuffpak made by the Nalpak Group. I have 2. One that will accept a full length Boyt padded case (Up to 5 or 6) and a shorter version
for the Boyt takedown cases. Guns in a Boyt case with hunting clothes, ammo, or whatever packed around them inside the Tuffpak and it's virtually indestructible.

2. Going out to hunt or the range not crossing state lines ( where is matters or not)
Boyt full length padded case.
3. An event where you might be in a showy mood.
I have a few of these as a result of poor purchasing decisions but not really my thing
I'm with others who favor the Boyt takedown cases especially when travelling to a venue with several guns. Nothing packs and stacks like they do IMO and Lord forbid I end up in a hotel where I have to take them in every night but if I do they stack neatly and easily on a cart.
