Fox Collectors

New gun to me and I'm still adjusting to the dimensions. Years ago I used a Parker with similar drop and I got pretty good with it, but since then most of my doubles of choice have more modern dimensions and it's taking some time to figure it out again. But a few days in the field with the Fox and I am starting to connect more consistently.

It's the 3 1/8 DOH that's the killer. I much prefer something modern like 2 1/4. The 1905 Parker I have is 3 1/4 DOH, so I know I just need practice with it.

Arizona - Gambel's and Scaled (Blue) quail. We have three species of quail in AZ (four if you include the highly endangered Masked bobwhite). Here's a photo of all three huntable species. From the left - Scaled, Mearns, Gambel's.

Nice hunt - any rattlesnakes in that habitat?

Yes, but you aren't likely to see any at this time of year.

Thanks! I thought they were Scaled and Gambles but wanted to be sure. You are a lucky man to have all three species in your area. Bet that makes for some great hunting!

Great photos! I took my first Gambels in the Tucson area several years ago with a 20 S X S, but it wasn't a Fox. I have since remedied that with a "re-made to order" Philly Sterly 20 with 28" barrels. Mine isn't stocked with as much drop as yours, though. I had the chambers lengthened to 2 3/4", chokes opened to .006" and .016", and added a Silvers type pad to increase the LOP to suit me. It's a sweetie. I know you'll love yours, but keep in mind there are others out there that may have a friendlier drop at heel for you. Three and one-quarter inches DAH is pretty extreme as far as Foxes go. Most aren't that much.

It's pretty wild to take all three species on the same day. That's a slam.

Thanks! Prickly stuff is always an issue. I just chalk it up to being part of the desert experience for the dogs and the hunters. The dogs tend to avoid the bigger cacti, but the little ones can still cause problems.
