Sometime around "the day or eve" I take a moment to sit quietly with a favorite libation and a pipe of fine tobacco in my old clay churchwarden (very Elizabethan don'tchaknow), usually something rich and festive like Country Squire's Figgy Pudding (yum!). And I contemplate my good fortune: good friends, a wonderful family, reasonable health, and as my late brother used to say: "enough to eat, a roof over one's head, and a little recreation". This group here is a contributor to that, and I thank you. So to each and every one: Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, thank you for your fellowship, and good wishes to all as we sally forth into 2025!

I actually do that more frequently than once a year, and find my enjoyment in a cigar, in lieu of the pipe. As I grow longer in the tooth I find myself appreciating my blessings all the more. One of my favorite places to do so is at the mighty Savannah River near my home.

Before I moved to MA I was in RI and my tradition was Christmas night head to a tidal pond and fly fish for the “Twelve Stripers of Christmas.” Did that for 7 years and accomplished it twice.

New Year’s Eve was similar -launch a cast as clock strikes midnight and catch what I liked to think was the first striper in North America of the new year (highly doubting anyone else was doing this anywhere). 5 of 7 years got one within 15min. Then sit and have a glass of scotch before leaving.

Yeah did much the same thing after all the guests, kids and grandkids were gone after Christmas Eve dinner: Put my goose hunting bibs, Tam O'Shanter and down vest on, poured a finger and thumb of Courvoisier VS, repaired to my frigid screen porch, fired up an Arturo Fuentes Sun Grown Double Chateau, and had Alexa play Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas In Wales." Queen and I spent most of Christmas Day home alone, just puttering around and enjoying a relaxing day. I watched a couple seasonal movies with her. I'm not much on the Hallmark genre Christmas movies, they're all cookie cutter themes. But, there'a a new comedy movie out for this season that I enjoyed. It's called "Red One", about Santa Claus being kidnapped by a witch and being recovered in time for his all-night sleigh ride. It's very well done and I found myself surprisingly enjoying it. Santa's head of security is played by Dwayne Johnson, who has become a pretty fair actor in his own right. Just a lighthearted comedy that fits the season well. It's done by Prime Video so we got to watch it for free.

Hallmark Christmas is 365 days a year now. What's up with that? Or should I say "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

Gotta admit I'm a Hallmark movie sucker, especially the Christmas ones. Yeah, the plots are weak, the outcomes are predictable, but the scenery and sets are always gorgeous and they're good, wholesome old-fashioned stories. A lot of 'em take me back to the small town I grew up in, and frankly I often wish things were still that way.

I’m a Hallmark Christmas movie junkie to. I always joke w/my wife that I think they are going to fall in love!!! HaHa. Like F2F said, usually small town, clean, cute predictable story line but what’s wrong with that. My wife got me this mug last year!
