WOW; great gun! To my way of thinking there was no finer design than the gun built on these specs for grouse and woodcock hunting. Mine is a standard skeet and upland game gun (SKUGG), same gauge but with straight grip stock. Light, fast handling with wide-open chokes, I rate it as the best close-quarter upland gun ever built! Super gun. I have seen one of these in person and that was about 15 years ago at a small auction in Va. Should have bought it at that time.

Great gun with an interesting history. Thank you for sharing.
When the SP-/SPE-Grade was introduced in mid-1932, the frames were absolutely plain --
By about 1935, Savage added a bit of border engraving on the frames --
The SP-/SPE-Grade slim forearms had the black inlay at the tip --
and they also introduced the SP-/SPE-Grade Skeet & Upland Game Gun with the frame engraved with coarse scroll --
The OP's gun has the engraved frame of an SPE-Grade Skeet & Upland Game Gun.
A bit later they engraved
A.H. Fox to the sides of the frames of the SP-/SPE-Grades --
and the Skeet & Upland Game Guns --
It appears the boys & girls in the factory pulled an SP-Grade Skeet & Upland Game Gun from inventory added ejectors and restocked it to suit Mr. Hickey.

Firebird301,
Thanks for sharing pics of the gun and the letter/.history. Great find and about perfect dimensions and chokes for a fine grouse gun. I am a fan of the 16 SP/SPE’s. I am thoroughly sure you will enjoy that one!!
