Saw that gun recently. It's a true stunner, with condition not normally encountered.

Got to give the guy credit. He was determined to keep the old girl shooting.

The gun I really wonder about is this XE-Grade that went to L.H. Hagen in Norway --
It surfaced on another web site a while back, still in Norway. Wonder if it shot any Nazis during the occupation?

You guys are blinded by the hinge-pin! That gun is a marvel of technicana! What looks like a ham and egg stock reinforcement is actually a precursor to the legendary, Greener cross bolt.
Lest we forget the adage: Beware the man with ONE gun. I bet that dude shot lights-out with that old gal!!!

Our "Tom" has the gift of words very much like our late departed Tom Gibbons. "Not a screw turned".

Well this made me smile….. Yankee Ingenuity on a Winchester Model 97.
“Tom” told me that the president of his club is adamant that skeet shooters should never leave an empty hull on the ground. Problem solved.

Simply brilliant. Why didn't I think of that?

No work and little money during the Great Depression, and men were trying to supplement their family’s food with game in season and maybe not. No food stamps, entitlements, programs, handouts, prepaid debit cards, etc. Ya gotta fix and use the gun ya have. Those were much different times that very few living today would truly understand, and that’s reflected in many of the vintage guns we see with home repairs. And imo there’s a soul in many of them that few of our high condition and custom guns will ever have.
Here's an early B Grade Fox with a split wrist I had restocked a while back. Decent craftsmanship on this one.

It's called resourcefulness. My grandparents grew up during the GD and the stories they told. Glue was cheaper than buying new shoes. Glue the sole back on. Patch the hole. No judgement by peers. Oversized Handmedown winter boots. Fill the space with newspaper for insulation. That's why both my grandmothers could make a pair of pants or shirt from a piece of cloth. Sew anything back together.
It was survival. No prestige. No judgement.
