Small gauge two barrel sets

I have seen the low numbers on how many small gauge guns were made but I never seen any numbers about 2 barrel factory orders in small gauge. Does anyone have idea how many 16 and 20’s were ordered that way. Thanks Mac

I don't think anyone can answer that question. I have a two barrel A grade 16/20 set. The factory card states the gun being a 16 gauge with 30" barrels. The 20 gauge barrel set was either original to the gun or the gun was sent back to the Fox factory for the 20 gauge 32" set shortly after production.

Does anyone have a 16-/20-gauge two-barrel set that letters as such from new?
I suspect there are far more composed two-barrel sets than left North 18th Street new.

Dave - have you seen any Fox factory cards that specify both a 20 and 16 ga barrel?
If so, were the serial numbers of the receiver in the 2xx,xxx or 3xx,xxx range?

I was going to put together a 28-20-16 gauge gun but sold the unchambered 20 gauge barrels. Bobby

I have a Fox AE 20 ga 2 barrel set. The second set of barrels and forend were obviously ordered later.
It’s had some work, commissioned by me, many years later.

Thanks for all the responses. I am waiting on final restorations for a XE 20 factory 2 barrel set with order card confirming. Have not ever seen many factory 2 barrel Fox guns and not really mentioned in A H Fox book.

I have a two barrel set A Grd 16. SN# 300770. The letter from JTC does not mention the second set of barrels. It was shipped 11/6/19 from Philadelphia. The second set of barrels are Utica 28” barrels choked IC/IM with the 2 3/4” stamping on the left barrel. The 26” barrels are choked IC/M. I can’t say whether it was sent back or not but am leaning towards a composed 2 barrel set. attached are pics of the stamping on the second set of barrels.
It has been my go to grouse and woodcock gun for about 14 years now as having the flexibility/choice of chokes and barrel lengths provides a lot of options. When I got the gun it was in need of some cosmetic work so it has had both barrels reblued, re-cased colored by Ohio Case Color prior to his retirement and refresh of the stock finish and a period Hawkins pad added. It is an extractor model which I prefer for hunting given I hate to see shells laying about in the woods. Brett

Very nice Brett and seems to be a righteous second barrel set that post-dates the original 1915 gun - with the SP/oval proof mark on the barrel flat along with the "2" stamped on the barrel flat and also on its fitted forend iron. Mitzie could have fitted the #2 barrel and forend as he had the proper stamps, but he usually added another character to indicate his work and I don't see any. One curiosity is that the "2" on each piece is preceded by a prick punch mark, the first time I remember seeing that.
Are you going to make it to the Northeast or the Northern this year? frank

Frank, you are correct there is a period/punch mark that precedes the “2”. I don’t know if I’ve seen it previously.
Here are pics of two orphan barrel sets I have that have a “2” designation and do not have that period/punch mark. Interestingly the AE barrels and second forearm (both w/“2”) were with the gun and other barrels originally. When a friend of mine sold the gun the purchaser did not want the second set of barrels and said he had no use for them. I figured I could use them for a project one of these days. The Sterlingworth barrels were bought at a local show here in MI without a forend a number of years ago for the same purpose of future “projects”. Both of these barrel sets are Savage era and so stamped w/Utica, NY designation/address
As it relates to the Northern SxS I’m still on the fence. Want to but not sure I’ll be able to. I am going to the Southern for the first time this year. My kitchen passes are limited so I have to use them when I can!!!
