Fox Collectors

I enjoyed the articles in the latest newsletter and had some observations in the B grade article. It seems there were a few variables in the patterns, I noticed in the subject gun Ansley H Fox looks stamped as I have observed others. My B, second style also, is engraved. Just wondering if others have seen this and if this is random. thanks

My 1918 BE.

In all the pictures of Ansley H. Fox doubles I've saved, on one second gen B-Grade in the 15xxx has the name that appears to be roll-stamped on the frame.

My BE in the Newsletter article is roll stamped. Thanks for showing us your gun. There is always exceptions in collecting these Fox guns! Craig

Are there any more examples of Gen 3 engraving? How many were made and in what grades?

The only 3rd gen 12-gauge B I've recorded is 19493.

I found 24 B quality 20-gauges up through 200304 and the card for 200306 says "new style engraving." Serial number 200164 is shown in The Double Gun Journal, Volume One, Issue 2,

I found 18 B quality 16-gauges up through 300219 and the card for 300221, an A-grade, that says "new type." Are these smallbores all 3rd gen or are some 2nd gen?

Greyfox, very nice. I've owned a few second gen B's and like many others here, they are my favorite.

I see you're in the northeast and on another thread you said you're an avid bird hunter and clays shooter. There are a few others here with the same interests and I sure hope you can make it to the Northeast SxS at Hausmann's Hidden Hollow in northeast PA in June. A Foxfest and bird hunters delight for sure and with plenty of grousey clays shooting to boot!

Frank is correct. If you make the effort to attend I promise you that you will not be disappointed. It's the one and only Fox event of the year.

Here’s a pic of a special Upland BE in the s/n 22,000 range that was ordered "ultra light" with C Grade wood and blued (not case colored) frame with special engraving. Fox got her to weight as ordered by heavily striking the barrels. I hunted grouse with her for a few years but she was too much of a good thing - too whippy - and I was always afraid of denting the really thin barrels. Traded her off and a few years later I saw her for sale on one of the internet sites with a rippled barrel where a dent had been pushed out. frank

I had questions on that special BE I posted. Of course in that s/n range it's a 12-gauge, ordered and shipped at weight 6-6 (28" barrels). Ordered with Cyl and Full chokes. also with note: "Pattern gun and send patterns". Pellet counts were R 191/195 and L 321/329. Shot charge/pellet size were not noted on the Record Card. She was ordered by the Dad of a then elderly gent from SW PA who told the intermediary buyer I got it from that his Dad was a traveling salesman for a company in WV. A really cool gun but IMO not for brush hunting with thinner barrels and the inevitable trips/falls and swinging against saplings and limbs. frank
