Any idea as to what type or blend of finish was used by the craftsmen on A grade Fox wood back in 1906-10?

The catalogues of that era are mute on the point. Later catalogs have this blurb which really only applies to high grade guns --

Well, I don't know about F-Grades nor the copywriter's verbiage in Dave's inset but I’ve seen info that the finish used on earlier low to mid Graded Fox guns was a relatively quick drying "wiping varnish" with an ingredient to help keep the finish from getting brittle in cold weather. frank
