Our wild bird seasons are over now in Virginia. But I need to get out and Gunner needs to run. We ran a few miles in the brush today and ended up with 12 woodcock points in a little over an hour.
October can’t come soon enough…

Very cool to be able to train pointing breeds on wild birds in the spring like that especially woodcock being the tight holding birds they are .
I run field bred English cockers and woodcock aren't an option in the spring . Do you do any banding ?
Best , Jim

Great that you are getting into birds for spring training. Woodcock are in the process of their Northern migration and hope to do the same this weekend weather permitting.

I flushed 4 woodcock last weekend at a tower shoot in southern NJ while walking from shooting station to shooting station during the course of the day.

It's amazing to watch them flush without the distraction of trying to aim and get a shot. A total joy and quite a different experience.

They do a spring woodcock survey not far from me in Maryland next to the Potomac River. Had the highest number ever recorded during the survey this spring. Seems like the little buggers had a great nesting year last year. Hope it continues. Roger I agree, they are even more fun when you aren't trying to shoot them.
