My first Fox

Hello fellow fox people!
I recently won this at an auction here in Canada. It is a Utica 16ga Sterlingworth. Appears to be choked IC/M with 28" barrels. Barrels appear to be 4 weight, bluing is good with with some wear and scuffs and a couple of small pits on that exterior, bores are shiny.
Stock is good except for a slight crack along the grain which appears to be just in the finish. I did remove the recoil pad which had been glued on to check, was not used to seeing a solid butt stock. I had planned to replace the pad with an appropriate style plate anyway, it's on order now.

One thing that has me wondering about my gun is the forend. It appears to have been replaced at some time. For one thing the colour of the finish has slightly less red tones than the buttstock. And although it has my serial number (376276) stamped on it it appears to have been stamped over top of another number. Finally have taken the time to get some pictures.
The original number appears to be 378310, less than 200 to the last 16 ga number.
I'm hoping that this was done at the factory and that my letter will reflect this, still waiting for it.

Nice late
FOX-STERLINGWORTH. I use to own an identical gun 80 digits lower serial number.

My repro butt plate has finally arrived and been fitted. I had ordered it back in December along with a butt plate for a Stevens and some appropriate screws but when the order arrived only the screws and the Stevens butt plate were in the package. Had to wait for another to arrive.
Also finally got my letter a while back. Gun was manufactured in 1939 as a Sterlingworth Field with 28" barrels choked M/F. So barrel lengths appear to be original but chokes have been opened up to ~ IC/M at some point.

Barnaby,
Butt plate looks good! Nice looking 16 ga. As far as the forend and over stamped serial numbers we’ll probably never know if original or replaced. You have a late gun so at that point they could have been using up what parts they had or could have been replaced later.
