Michigan Duck Opener in the Southern Zone

Post by Jeff S »

Ah! It's that time of the year again. Opening day for ducks in Michigan's Southern Zone. Before sun up, we all met at "Mud Lake" to sneak into our favorite blinds, with hopes of connecting with mallards and wood ducks. This year there were 8 of us nestled into 4 different blinds. While we only managed to get a total of 8 ducks, a good time was had by all. I hope all of the other members of the Fox Fraternity are having a great Fall. Happy Hunting, Jeff

Sunday (Day 2) I headed back out to the lake with my son-in-law, Osh. The morning drizzle kept it a little darker than normal and a couple of woodies snuck past us. However, we were fortunate enough to get 3 more birds. That drake mallard tasted pretty good, grilled it this afternoon. Cheers!

Good question. Osh had never carried a gun until he joined our family. Several times I took him to the gun club, and to a pheasant farm, and let him use my Browning BSS. He didn't fall in love with it, so I switched him to my Benelli Super Black Eagle. He likes it and he seems to shoot it a little better so he has been using that gun. For those of us that started shooting when we were 12, it's tough to remember what it's like "just starting". Wood ducks buzzing over the decoys seldom fly in a straight line. :)

Nice start to the season Jeff. Good job considering the lack of weather.
I missed last Saturday in our Northern Zone as I had a fever for 5 days, my covid test came back negative. My buddies all got stunked.
This Saturday is our opener and we are holding some widgeon, teal and woodies, no big ducks yet.

You had a real good looking crew for the opener, Jeff. My opener is Oct 23rd. You guys (and gals) did real well. Jim
