Fox Collectors

At the Southern SxS, I became the proud owner of a Fox Sterlingworth, serial #77995. I asked the seller I bought the gun from whether it was safe to shoot modern loads in the gun, or whether I should shoot reduced pressure loads. "Oh, it's fine to shoot a 1oz load, no problem! You don't need the low pressure shells!" Guess what? The second time I shot the gun (sporting clays) a chip came off the stock where the stock meets the right hand side of the receiver. The chip had previously been repaired, and the repair did not hold. I have no idea where the chip fell. My question, in addition to everything else you can tell me about my gun, and what to feed it, and what not to feed it, is: "repair the stock, or replace? And who to get to do this work, since I am not handy." I contacted Brian Dudley, but he said he took in so much work at the Southern SxS that he can't take on any more. Your gun, after being examined by a gunsmith with double gunknowledge, should be fine with the 1oz. load. It's not the pressure that knocked that chip loose it was a bad repair. You should be able to have that repaired and not see the repair by a couple of guys. One is called the Stock Doctor I believe and the other is a gentleman by the name of Mark Beasland. Hopefully someone will jump in and verify some contact info.

Where are you located?

They can be fixed right. Twenty-eight years ago such a chip came out of the head of the stock of my 12-gauge Fox-Sterlingworth Ejector Skeet & Upland Game Gun, at the Potomac River Gun Club in Southern Maryland. Jeff Mudd spotted the about quarter by three-eighths inch piece in the grass. I took it to Bill Harvey in Colora, Maryland. I've shot the gun tens of thousands of rounds on the skeet fields and the repair our departed friend did has held. By a large margin, I've put more rounds through this gun than all the other Fox doubles I own.

Mark Larson is another fella who can make that repair invisible. He's repaired a couple things for me and I've been very satisfied. He's in Portland, Oregon.

Where might you be located. Might have some recommendations where you can drive and drop the gun off and get it taken care of. PS. The Stock Doctor teaches a one week class on who to repair such things. Quite a few folks have taken that course over the years.

All: I am in Pittsboro, NC a few miles from Deep River Sporting Clays, the spring site of the Southern SxS. If I can figure out how to post the pictures I have, I will do so. In the meantime, I will get my baby to the gunsmith at Deep River, Chuck Foster, and also start checking out the stock repair people you guys mentioned online. Thanks so much for the replies!
