New to me 16g A Grade w/ 3wt Barrels

Post by fishrising »

Back in the club! After selling [mistakenly] my 16g Sterlingworth a few years ago, I’ve acquired a 1920’s 16ga A Grade with 3wt barrels, refinished in the 70’s so I was told. I don’t know much else about it, but will be ordering the card for it. 28” barrels, 2 beads, 2 3/4” chambers, IC/IM

I will most likely install a period correct (repro if I must) pad for it. Need to do homework on that. Problem is I need 15” +/- a little length of pull, so I will need to figure out a way to lengthen it without it looking “too modern.” LoP to the end of the wood is about 13 7/8” and to the end of the pad is about 14 3/4” (so it’s close).

I’ll post this in another sub-forum...it seems to potentially have a trigger/firing issue with the 2nd trigger. 1st trigger seems fine, but the 2nd seems soft and does not “click” when using snap caps. I haven’t actually shot this gun yet. Previous owner says he recently shot some clays with it, and it was fine.

Anyway, on to the pics:

Trying to link a video of the trigger sounds, 1st sound is safety off, 2nd is the 1st trigger, 3rd is the 2nd trigger. Listening to this sounds better (like the 2nd trigger is fine) than I am hearing when I do actually do it:

Very nice photo's. Good job.

I couldn't make much of your sound track.

Could definitely hear the first sound with the SAFE going forward, and then the first trigger and then the second trigger. I didn't hear much difference but a pretty clever way to demonstrate your problem.

Sorry I couldn't help. I just want to commend you and your good photo's.

No it’s not leather, if it were it’d be staying on for sure. It’s a decelerator pad. It works and is clean, so I may not rush into replacing it.

Congratulations on the new Fox. A light weight gun like that will be a pleasure to take hunting. I look forward to seeing it along side some dead birds.

I didn't try the link but thanks for posting it and your pics. Nice looking Fox. Just a guess, it might be that the left hammer isn't staying cocked after opening the gun and all you feel when you pull that trigger is the sear spring. Also I assume you know the left barrel is off the face (second pic) by several thou and that might be something with the locking bolt mechanism. The break lever is quite far right and that could be a clue. You may want to send your Fox to a good gunsmith for evaluation.

Good catch, the gun might not have been completely closed for the pics. I’ll certainly give it another look. Also I’ll have to do some homework on which gunsmiths are Fox specialists. And more so, see if they are local to me in CT, or the New England, or NY area....
