Made quite a few trips to Coney Island back then. Just a reasonably short walk from the ship to the subway and directly to Coney Island.

For sure; Steeplechase and the wind grates that followed, closely watched by many young guys, including me as the blast of air from the wind grates caused many a young lady to expose her undies. Yes, very interesting for a preteen boy and his older brothers and I suspect some fathers. In other words, just about any male watching. In those days, all the girls that I remember seeing wore underwear. May not be the case today. But of course, I wouldn't know about that.

And the Thunder Bolt and Cyclone roller coasters. Some of the best of those times. I never rode the Parachute Jump. Wish I had.

Yes Tom, I would normally remember the gun stuff. Must have been spending too much time at the wind grates.

Birdawg, you're right, still way out of Foxdom but it does bring back good memories.

That box of lacquered Arrow Express bring back fond memories of youth. When I got my Super-Fox in August 1963, it came with two and a half boxes of that style of 12-gauge 3-inch Arrow Express in #4 and #5 shot. By the 1965 season, I'm sure they had all been shot at dem web footed fowls, except for one that remains in my shell collection.

Here I'm holding it opening weekend 1966 with my two-day limit of ducks and my then new to me A-Grade with the first Pheasant I shot with it. I shot two with it Tuesday.



I actually haven't done any waterfowl hunting since the 2004 season. I've pretty much become an upland guy.

Looks to me that you were pretty darn good at it when you were doin it!....great pic! You look like a movie star in a Western (with ducks).

Funny....my first Fox was at the opposite end of the spectrum. A 5 3/4 lb, 26", 20ga. Came across it at the Empire Arms gunshow in Rochester about 1990. I didn't know much about Foxes but it spoke to me. I've since come to realize it was the most expert redo of a SW I've ever seen...replete with beautiful cyanide colors in tiny intricate swirls like the 1927 in the directory. I've no idea who did it. Maybe Jolly Bill would know who was doing cyanide locally. Given the hazards I wonder if anybody is doing them anymore?

Here is a picture of me 28 years ago at Remington Farms on a goose hunt. The second picture is after a hunt at Brigintine NWR in 1981 with my golden Maggie. Where do the years go.

Doug Turnbull was doing some refinishing; bluing, case coloring, etc. at his father's shop back around then. That would be his father Terry Turnbull at the now gone Creekside Gun Shop in Holcomb, NY. A lot of nice stuff used to go thru there.

They did the picture while I waited. I found the picture in some of my stuff a couple years ago. I left it on our kitchen table and my two boys asks, who'se in the picture.

Magwa, sorry for the tardy reply on the rifled slugs. I've used paper rifled slug loads in all kinds of steel tubed vintage shotguns since I was a kid. And I still do for an outing or two during our local deer season. The soft lead hollow-cored rifled slug is made to swage through any typical choke. NOTE: these were/are NOT the Brenneke type slug that is solid lead. Old time paper rifled slug loads can be picked up at most any larger gun show. The boxes carry the standard warnings not to use them in short chambers, or in damascus or twist barreled guns. RST does not load rifled slugs.

Just as an aside, the old time "punkin balls" are actually solid round balls that sort of bounce down the bore. Reportedly they were made small enough diameter to pass though the tightest choke, but I never measured any and can't confirm that. They are much different than the vintage type rifled slugs with a hollow core. I fired an old time punkin ball once. When a very young pup I got three from a buddy and shot one through a single barrel Eastern Arms 12 gauge, at an old wooded chair bottom in a vacant lot where my Uncle's home now stands. Strangely enough my wiggles and wobbles compensated and I hit the chair bottom almost dead center. I saved the other two shells and was "ready for the deer woods". Strange the things we remember.
