Lengthen chambers?
Re: Lengthen chambers?
What on earth is a Hartin crimp?
This is not a collector gun. I am having to have it put back on face, trigger work, chamber polish and open the chokes. It has a horrible after market stock on it. The receiver has some bluing smeared on it. It does work and I paid $1k for it, so I'm turning it into a custom stocked shooter. I do appreciate all the knowledge gathered here on this bb. The only reason I'm keeping this and putting money in it is because it has 30" barrels. These are the number 2 set and have no idea where #1 is.
Thanks,
Jeff

Re: Lengthen chambers?
Jeff the Hartin crimp is simply shortening the empty hull to whatever length you desire and load the shell as normal until you get to the crimp starter, at that point an over shot card is placed over the shot then you resume the load process as normal starting the crimp and then final crimp. The overshot card keeps everything together as the folded crimp is not long enough to seal the shell. As stated above no adjustments or die changes are required.JNW wrote:What on earth is a Hartin crimp?

TB,
Thanks for the explanation. I shoot a few thousand 20 gauge rounds a year and that would slow me down on my reloading. I am going to have to consider all my options and make a plan.
Regards,
Jeff

Re: Lengthen chambers?
Jeff, knowing what the gun is and how much you shoot I would lengthen the forcing cones, pick some mild 20 ga reloads, and shoot the crap out of the gun.

Re: Lengthen chambers?
Quite frankly if "Savage" ran my chambers out and or destroyed my barrels with out consulting me they woulda heard from my lawyer PDQ !Researcher wrote:That was from the later 1930s onward when a gun was returned to Savage Arms Corp. And, if the barrels didn't pass Savage's proof they were destroyed and Savage would fit a new set at 10% below cost "as a matter of customer good will!!".....when barrels were return to Fox for repair, if the chambers were not 2 3/4" they cut them to 2 3/4", pressure tested and remarked the barrels.

Re: Lengthen chambers?
You're talking about another era, 80 years ago most people didn't have "my lawyer", many people didn't have jobs. People that had lawyers didn't worry about a $75.00 gun and it was a given Fox didn't work on barrels that would not pass their standards for repair and that included 2 3/4" chambers.

Re: Lengthen chambers?
The fact that by 1938, the Savage Arms Corp.'s A.H. Fox catalogues began including the line "Chambered for 2 3/4" Shells." and the they began marking the guns with the gauge and chamber length stamped on them stems from a SAAMI conference on March 26, 1937, that passed a resolution requiring: "That all guns be marked so that the consumer will be able to tell the chamber length, as for example by marking 2 3/4 inch chamber etc."

Matters not if it were 80 years ago or 80 seconds ago .abner wrote:You're talking about another era, 80 years ago most people didn't have "my lawyer", many people didn't have jobs.
