Fox Collectors

Wednesday I received a call from Jon Hosford that the barrel work on my SBT is complete. I’m looking forward to removing it from the “injured and disabled” list. The gun “checks” 3 of your boxes. SBT, 32”, straight grip.

I have shot long barreled S X Ss for so long, mostly at doves (but also at ducks) that I don't even consider 30" to be long, anymore. Some of the best shooting I've ever done on quail and woodcock was with a 30" gun. But, I know that is just an idiosyncrasy of mine.

I should get all my long barreled guns (32" and longer) out and take a pic of them together, one day. Might be fun.

Agree with your list Craig; also agree with Dave's comments about smallbore 32-inchers' "rare -earth" prices (ask me how I know!). Graded smallbores are out there and more are coming but no one seems interested in busting a move on the ones available (HINT!!)/ Kevin

I've got a few of those covered. 16 and 20 gauge Sterly's with 30" barrels. Custom 16 gauge with 32 and 28 inch barrels. The small bore graded Foxes, A Skeet and Upland. Some fellow in New York now owns my Straight grip Super with 32" barrels and I'm hoping a pic of it in the duck blind shows up soon.

20g SW with 26/28 barrels and nothing tighter than M is what I intend to buy someday. As Frank mentions, with good stock dimensions. I bought 1 or 2 SxS with unfavorable dimensions (luckily <$400 each) and cant hit a thing (see pic in hunting with a fox of SW with cardboard comb and electrical tape).

Agree on the Sterlingworth Skeet & Upland small bore as well as the SPE Skeet & Upland small bore although the prices for these have risen considerably over the last several years.

I have a 20 ga 30 inch sterlingworth it is a dove killer and once owned a 32 inch factory 3in CE 20 ga with beautiful wood. Bobby

That's what I wanted too, Jeff. Finally found a nice, tight example with 28" barrels about five years ago. I fitted a pad to it to get the LOP I needed and sent it to Dean Harris. He opened the chambers to 2 3/4" and the chokes to .006"R and .016"L. It is a supreme quail gun. On the first outing with it I, and a friend to my left, approached the brace of pointers on the edge of a field road. When the birds flushed I picked a going away bird and hit the front trigger, then swung on a quartering away crosser and dumped him with the left barrel, a longish shot. I went to get the second bird first, as it was a ways out there. When I returned, my host handed me two more dead birds and grinned, saying that I had killed two with my first shot.

That was the beginning of a great relationship with that little gem of a gun. I'd love to find a graded 20 one day, specced out exactly like the SW, to replace it, but it would be hard to let it go.

Craig, I’m quite fond of my 30” 16 ga. Sterly (Joan), and my 16 ga. A grade with 26” barrels (Queenie) is just plan fun to handle

Great topic Craig. I've got #'s 1,2 and 4 covered nicely. Now I'm not a big 16ga fan but if I may I'd like to shine a light on the 16ga. SW deluxe. Mine has 28" tubes and all original with slotted pad and dual beads and a Philly style forend . It makes the trip to SD every year for our 16ga day.

Nice list Craig. I'm less than less well-heeled; a LOT less ! I don't hunt ducks anymore so I don't have a Super Fox (which are way cool however), don't care for barrels over 28" (I do have a 12ga 28/30 set though), and I'm not a fan of straight grips or SPE's so I don't need to check those boxes. Just a hunter and not a collector, so my needs/wants are a lot simpler; my meager accumulation includes:

Sterlingworths in 20, 16 and 12,
A Grades in 20, 16, and 12
SBT

Don't forget Pigeon Guns on the list. I can't own enough 32" strait stock 12 gauges, safety delete even better.
