Barrel weight designation (16 Ga.)

Post by nca225 »

Would one run into problems with wall thickness by enlarging the chambers on 3 weight barrels or was it just the 4s?

Thanks,

In my view that is best decided by a good shotgun barrel smith. There are just to many variables in these gun. Some 3 weight barrels can be as thin as 4's after striking.

Personally I just shoot 2 3/4" loads in my 16's. As long as I am shooting fairly low pressure 1 oz loads I don't worry about the short chambers on 16s. I would not shoot any of the hot 1 1/8 loads in any of the Fox 16s since they do have less mass across the head of the stock and wrist.
This is what makes 16 Fox guns a delight to me and if I do my part 1 oz is plenty.
You mileage may vary as they say.

Properly measuring the wall thickness is the only way to know. As far as I'm concerned, removing metal cannot be good.

Same reply as Researcher, said differently. The Fox Proof mark meant something when your gun was made. Do you really want to modify its chambers? Silvers

You can buy a lot of quality 2 1/2 inch 16 gauge ammuntion for the cost of lengthening your chambers and if you reload there is no difference in cost between loading 2 9/16th and 2 3/4 inch ammuntion.
