Tom, I'm sorry to hear of your injury and hope you and your Lew are well on the mend. I'm not there in local society at your location but if just one incident it wouldn’t surprise me that the biter dog gets no more of a reaction beyond a better fence. I can hear it now, how the biter was incited by yours, got confused and was just protecting himself when he accidentally bit you. Of course that's nonsense but so goes the lack of accountability for/by much of society nowadays. frank

Sadly.
This is the fence fortified. Think this isn't the best fix.

See the doctor for the second time Monday. I see a needle aspiration happening next week as soon as it can be scheduled. Ultrasound Friday showed a 3.5 inch by 2.5 inch by 1 inch deep hematoma. The radiologist recommended the needle aspiration guided by ultrasound.

Tom, again I’m sorry to hear of your ongoing treatments.

It doesn’t look like much of an additional barrier with those jump thru openings here and there. I can understand the owner wanting to keep his dog but if that’s all he’s going to do that looks like minimal effort. frank

Good luck with that Tom. Maybe filing a civil suite in the local court ssytem will encourage him to "fortify" that fence better.

Because of the damage the bite caused, this case was forwarded to the Commonwealth Attorneys Office for review. It seems it will go to court and the dog will be placed in the dangerous dog category. That requires the dog to be muzzled for the next two years when in public and also requires the fence to be constructed in accordance with Animal Controls standards for a dangerous dog. If the dog bites someone else during the next two years he will be surrendered to the state.

Did not realize this is a big deal in VA, but it is. They take bites seriously. My bite was labeled a a grade 4. Grade 5 is the highest. This bite was through my Blue Jeans. Glad I wasn't wearing shorts.

Sounds like the wheels are in motion. After rereading this post, I’m guessing that you were walking your dog in the neighborhood, and this is not your next door neighbor. I’ve often wondered if it would be a good idea to carry mace while walking, jogging or bicycling. The situation doesn’t seem as bad as years ago, but there are still uncontrolled dogs out there.

Correct Jeff,
This was in our neighborhood, but not my next door neighbor. I was at the end of a cul-de-sac where there is a 20 plus acre vacant field, bordered by a small creek. I have been taking my dogs there for 15 years. Got permission from the town mayor to run my dogs there off leash as they are all fitted with e collars when ever I run them. I had driven my 4Runner to the end of the cul-de-sac and let my dogs out for a run. Probably 30 seconds into the run I heard this dog barking and had both of mine on recall and headed back when the dog jumped the fence and came running.

He attacked Sophie briefly, but when I yelled he broke it off and I was able to get both of my dogs back in their crates and closed the 4Runner hatch.

It was when I was heading to the front door of the house to tell them the dog was out when he attacked.

PS. I think Bear spray might be a good idea. That said, I'm just avoiding that area until this gets resolved. If they end up putting up a 6 foot or higher fence I'll return. Its a great place to run the dogs because they always mow the field and it also has water. Being 500 yards from my front door is a real bonus. Thank goodness I had the 4Runner that day. I normally walk them on their leashes, but this time I was coming back from the Grocery Store and decided to swing by and let them get a quick 10 minute run before I headed home. I suspect if they had been on leashes both of my dogs would have been possibly killed and I would have been really chewed up as I would have been trying to defend them.
