card shoot with a wildfowl

Post by simcgunner »

Tonight I went to a card turkey shoot at a VFW in North-Carolina. All the shooters were shooting long barreled custom Guns with long chokes . Brought out my wild-fowl . Out of 12 rounds I won two including the 50/50 money purse, and was close on a few more . . A few of the guys came over to ask about the gun The old gun held its own against the outlaw guns at the shoot and were pretty impressed .

Nice shooting. Sounds like the Fox, and you, earned a little respect.
Shoot vintage firearms, relax, and have fun.

Congratulations. Isn't it just the most satisfying feeling when you can best those fellows shooting those modern guns?

That's cool!

I'm really surprised the LCS held its own against those true card guns. Some of them have insane amounts of choke.

I have a 34" barreled Wingmaster that I bought for $400 that has upwards of .065" constriction, partially due to back-boring.

Have you ever measured the constrictions in your WF?

Are we talking a Fox-Sterlingworth Wildfowl or an L.C. Smith Wildfowl?

Fox sterlingworth Wildfowl I have not measured choke. when I pattern tested it with boss bismuth a couple of years ago it seemed to shoot about the same as my winchester 21 duck gun at 40 yds.

Now that is cool!! When I was a kid we used to go w/my grandfather and great uncle to Turkey/card shoots in WV. That is a good memory for me! Nice that the Wildfowl did it again! Way to go!! I think I know that particular gun.

You sure do I' have a swan tag this year and can't decide to use it or a Ithaca magnum 10.

I know Allen replied that it was a SW Wildfowl, a cool rarely seen Fox The very few I've measured had more/less standard 3-inch chambers along with .729" bores and relatively short tapered chokes with Full choke constrictions around .040".

Just some additional comments on the LC Smith Long Range/Wildfowl guns. I did a lot of research and testing on them for my very last article submitted to the DGJ a few weeks before the editors folded. I asked for it to be returned and it’s still unpublished. LCS did some special borings on the earlier ones (combo of chambers, forcing cones, barrel caliber and choke profile) and in net one of those will hold its own against a good Super-Fox as regards patterning efficiency at long range. Love to see a good LCS Long Range strut its stuff at a Card shoot. frank

Allan, not to change the subject from your Fox Wildfowl but, is your Ithaca a NID Magnum, or is it a shorter chambered Super Ten?

No Stan its the magnum 10, 3 1/2" chambers with the through lug. I also picked up a Ithaca mag 10 auto that I never shot yet
big duck guns.jpg
duck gun pickture 8 GA English ,Ithaca magnum 10, super 10,gramps 10 GA.flues ,Fox wildfowl, Win 1901 10, model 21 duck. not in picture Ithaca mag 10 Auto and tolley 4 GA. I like big Guns. I gave away the super 10 and gramps Flues to youngsters I've been mentoring.The1901 was the first shotgun I had grandpa gave it to my brother and I to share. We Took turns carrying it after going to the hardware store in Danvers MA . The lady who worked there opened a box and sold us one shell at a time we couldn't afford a whole box. Before my older brother got his drivers license we took the bus and nobody ever said anything about the gun.

That must've been a very special person to have received a Super Ten as a gift.
