A Fun Opening Morning

Post by CalebH »

This morning was our dove opener. I didn't expect many birds at our little field, but more showed up than expected. We had a fun shoot and I really enjoyed shooting my new Sterly. It took me a minute to figure out my lead. I was feathering them in the beginning. Once I got that figured out though, I finished going 8 for 8. I think it is so cool that a gun made so long ago can still get the job done. Now time to get the charcoal ready :D

Wow! Nice shooting. Once again, the Fox gets the game.
Shoot vintage firearms, relax, and have fun.

Congrats. Miss my Virginia dove hunting. For 20 years 3 of us circled a water hole surrounding corn fields in Winchester Va, until the farm got sold. The last 90 minutes of the day they would head for the water by the dozens. Fast and furious. Limit was 12 then and pretty much it was a slam dunk we would be eating bacon wrapped dove beasts cooked on the grill.

I got an invite to a dove hunt in Central Va. The farmer went all out to attract birds he planted two large fields with sunflowers millet and wheat. harvested and burned strips. lots and lots of dove including many small ones. A good tune up for me and the dog for our trip Down to Maine for a cast and blast this month

Snuck off this evening and got one more shoot in. Even though it is a little over kill for a dove hunt, decided to take my Super since I have been dying to hunt with it. Wow is it tight choked! I missed a couple early on that were close and couldn't figure out what was going on. I finally connected on one and I could see just how tight the gun is choked. I can't wait to get this thing on the patterning board. I managed to get enough for supper though, and enjoyed every minute of it. I just kept staring at the gun during the lull periods. I've wanted a Super for so long, it is so cool to finally have one. I love it.

Supers, though a bit overkill, are fun once in a while on a dove shoot. Been there, done that, got that T-shirt. :D
