Got the dogs out yesterday. Temps 20 degrees below normal and I felt it. Went to a WMA in VA where you can find the occasional covey. Woodcock season first split ended last week. 2nd split starts on 27 Dec.
After hitting field edges with no success I was slipping over to another field and the dogs went into the woods and encountered some Woodcock. No shots taken as they weren't legal, but it was fun for the dogs. 5 birds found. Few nice points ensued. Snapped the attached Pic. Sophie is in front and Annie backing.
Sad to say the second split may be worthless. If it stays cold enough and the ground freezes they will be in the Carolinas by Dec 27th. Is what it is.

Re: Could be done
At least the dogs had fun.
Woodcock season here in MA was zero for me. Even when I was in VT the first 2 weeks of October I saw 0 and the last 2 years I out a few. People I know who hunt them regularly in MA said it was few and far in between this year.

Re: Could be done
I never tried to get her to back. However she spent time with a trainer in Sept for 3 weeks snd I believe backing started then.
