A.H Fox Grade B Double Barrel

Post by JackKennedy »

My wife recently inherited this from her grandfather - Ive don't a ton of research and couldn't find this exact one. Whats even more interesting is there was a letter that came with it from J.T Callahan Arms Historian. In the letter he claims the gun is a Grade A, but all the markings indicate Grade B. Would love any additional info on this guy - rarity or estimated value. We don't plan on selling but I'm really interested in the history of this piece. See pics

Mismatch. The J T Callahan letter cites s/n 24323 and the frame s/n is 24528.

As a former Director I have access to the Record Card files but I'm enjoined from doing copies or providing Card info. I will say though while doing some other records study this evening I looked up s/n 24528 and it shows as a B Grade with Ejectors. If you're an AHFCA member, you can order a Card copy as per directions posted there in the Members Forum, or if not a member by joining up first.

Sorry, we don't have enough pics and tech data on its current status to come up with any estimated value. frank

Jack,

There may be a good possibility that your wife's grandfather also owned the A grade with serial number 24323 that he had the letter for.

Some other family member has it? Or still with his stuff?

Nice looking BE12.

B grades from that era are beautiful guns and that’s a wonderful family heirloom. Are either you or your wife shooting enthusiasts? If you’re located in “East Coast” you could stop by a Fox event and show it off.

Ahh good catch. There are 4 pieces of paper that looked almost identical. maybe one of them is the record that matches this gun. thanks for sharing

I want to get into shooting more. I grew up in the midwest where its commonplace. we now live in NYC but Im defiantly going to look into some "local" fox events

Thanks for sharing. and I understand you are unable to provide card info. Is that something I could look up myself? or would that my something you would pay an antique authenticator/arms historian?

Here are a few more pics if its helpful. It also came with this case and what I assume is a barrel cleaner - not sure if the case is authentic as there are no markings on it. What would be my best course of action to get this fully identified and appraised?

John Callahan has retired. You could request a similar letter from the Cody Museum. Or, you can request a production card from this organization. That’s a beautiful gun.

Jack,

That Leg of Mutton case would be period correct for the gun. Looks like the closing strap is missing/broke off.

You do have the fore end for the gun don't you? It's not on the gun in the pictures you've posted.

Thanks Bill.

Jack,

FWIW, you've found your way to the most knowledgeable and experienced group of Fox aficionados on the planet. For $30 you can join us for a year+ and we'll email you a FREE factory production card copy on your B-grade (a $25 value) that will provide the same specs found in a factory letter from Cody. It will show the grade, barrel length, LOP, stock drops at heel and comb, grip style, gun weight and quite often, from where or for whom it was ordered. Nothing beats a hands-on inspection, but I'm quite confident we could steer you in the right direction. The gun looks to be in very nice condition, at least externally. I would like to see a better picture of the fore-end lug on the underside of the barrel as it looks a bit wonky in your pic.

We live to see family heirloom guns that emerge from the back of closets or from the dark confines of the attic! Would love to hear more about your wife's grandpa. Where was he from and where/what did he hunt??? Hope you decide to join us.
On the whole....I'd rather be in Philadelphia....

Is the gun missing it's forend? The checkering pattern on the stock is not correct for a B grade?? I'm pretty sure that is a replacement stock???

I see the OP has been on the site several times since Craig's last post on December 12. So, do you have the forend or not? frank
