Duck opener in Michigan’s U.P.

Post by Jeff S »

This weekend was the opener in the Upper. I always enjoy getting out there with a Fox, but this year was a little tough. Three other hunters beat us to our favorite spot. Too bad, but that is always a risk on public water. We moved to an adjacent spot and made the best of it. There were plenty of ducks in the air, and the “other guys” did well. For the weekend we only got 5 among the 3 of us, but we had a good time. Next year, I think I’ll camp out in the blind the night before. 😁

I think my favorite duck gun is my 1914 Fox B/C. Both barrels are choked .030” and it’s light and lively. I love shooting that gun.

Great report, Jeff. I know how tough duck hunting on public waters can be. I had some experience hunting two WMAs in eastern AR several years back. We were putting the boats in at 3:30 a.m. to get to a predetermined hole in the green timber and when we got there we could see headlamps all around, fellows that had gotten there earlier than us. It's tough hunting, and I probably won't subject myself to it anymore, under those conditions. I can usually satiate my ducking desires now on private land, but I do admire those younger guys, like yourself, who tough it out to do just that. It speaks of a great love for the sport, and a drive to see "first light" in wild places. I DO understand that.

Thanks for sharing it.
