Bought a 9mm pistol online. Mailed 3/9 from Lawrenceville, PA. Arrived 3/9 afternoon at Lancaster PA regional distribution. Left 3/10 morning and arrived afternoon in Chicopee MA regional center in afternoon. Now Chicopee is 40mi south on my FFL so it's close. Listed as "out for delivery" with delivery listed as 3/11. My FFL is right across the street from the Turners Falls MA Post Office so I stopped by around 1pm yesterday expecting it to be in.
Nope.
Checked the tracking number this morning thinking it may have been delivered late and I could pick it up today.
Nope.
Where is it?
It departed Chicopee MA yesterday morning and arrived in Albany NY regional center mid day. Then transferred to Newburgh, NY regional center arriving late afternoon. About 5am today it departed Newburgh NY for the Newark, NJ regional center where it checked in at 9:15am and checked out at 9:17am as headed back to Chicopee, MA regional center. Still listed in transit as of 3/12 at 2pm.

Re: Got To Love USPS
I had a very similar situation a few years ago. My gun got very close to its planned destination, then took a many days and thousands of miles trip around the country before it finally made it to me.
