1908 H&R single
1908 H&R single
Picked up a nice 16 gauge H&R single with a solid rib and un-bordered checkering.First time I’ve ever seen a gun with that type of checkering.Case colors have held up very well over the years too.

Very nice example! One will look a long time to find a nicer one.
The "Top Ribbed" Single Gun is not in H & R Catalog No. 15 which is circa 1924. It is in the 1926 E.K. Tryon catalog --
By the next H & R catalog I have, Catalog No. 19, dated 1931, the "Top Ribbed" Single Gun is called the No. 2 --
The "Top Ribbed" Single Gun was short-lived as it is gone from H & R Catalog No. 20, 1933.
The "Top Ribbed" Single Gun is not in H & R Catalog No. 15 which is circa 1924. It is in the 1926 E.K. Tryon catalog --

Cruising GI today I noticed McKune has one of these for sale in 20-gauge.

I actually saw the 16 when I went to the gun show on Saturday.The checkering threw me a bit as I had never seen borderless before. Passed on the gun,went home to research them a bit and saw that 20 online.Convinced me to go back on Sunday and thankfully the 16 was still there.

In the sixties, one of the surplus gun sellers put a bunch of early H&R ten gauge single barrels together, bored them out to 3 1/2". I don't remember whether they were Model 1908 or 1910, but I own one and will look at the model designation. The bad news is that my H&R opens by itself when fired with 3 1/2" shells. It is not from lack of condition, but from a less than sturdy locking mechanism. Years after these guns were marketed, H&R put a 3 1/2" ten gauge gun on the market, a gun that seems to digest the 3 1/2" shells a bit better than the old ones.
