LC Smith 3E

Post by Stan Hillis »

Yesterday was a beautiful day with cool temps in the low 50s and intermittent sun and clouds, with a little breeze. I was invited to a dove shoot less than a mile from my house, in a large sunflower field. The field was somewhere around 60 acres, with another one about that size about 1/4 mile away. across some scrub woods. Most of the doves were feeding in one of those fields, so 12 of us took to that field. One gun went to the other, mainly to keep the doves from going to it and settling once the shooting started in "our" field.

I anticipated high flying, mature birds and lots of shots at longish distances. I normally use a small bore gun for doves, and would have possibly used a 20 but, considering the size of the field and the few guns that would be there I decided to use a 12. I have had a Smith 3E with 32" ventilated rib barrels, and 3" chambers, for a couple years but had never taken it to the field. It had shot clays once, with "so-so" results, and had lingered in it's leg-of-mutton case ever since. My feelings went towards it, and giving it a chance to strut it's stuff. The long 32" barrels are choked .037" and .037", so it had what was needed to reach out and touch the long ones. I took Aguila 1 oz. loads of no.8s, at 1200 fps., though 7 1/2s might have been better, in hindsight.

It was a good choice. The birds were flying wide and high, and the long barrels and tight chokes were in their element. At the end of the afternoon I had a limit of fifteen. Hard earned birds, most taken at distance. Wonderful sport in the late season.

Stan, thanks for sharing your day and cool Smith with us. Both sound great and the pic is certainly proof of the pudding. Back in the summer we started seeing some Aquila target loads in local stores but they've disappeared over recent months along with almost all shotgun ammo except steel/waterfowl loads. It sounds like the Aguilas did well. Do you have any other perspectives on that 1-ounce/1200 loading?

Frank, they are among the softest shooting loads I've used in quite some time. They felt like 1/2 oz. loads in that big Smith. I have no idea as to the shot hardness, and haven't patterned them to see how they print. But, for "inexpensive" shells I'm, so far, impressed.

Unsure about the hull manufacturer. They're not Cheddites, with the stars on the head. Probably of Spanish make. They have an unusual little mark on the head. I'll try to get a good pic of it today and post it back here tonight. I'll certainly buy a few more flats of them at my gun range next time I'm there, if available.

I'm going to shoot doves again this afternoon, in one of my peanut fields. Man, I sure wish I had my 30" AE Fox 16 ga. back from Dewey. It would be perfect for the field we're shooting today.

Thanks for the report Stan. One of the guys I shoot with weekly bought a number of Aquila 1 oz. like you were shooting and he also remarked how soft they were and how well they crushed, not broke, targets.

Thank you for your post. A very nice gun and a wonderful day. Dove season in Idaho starts the first of September and most of the birds will leave in the next couple of weeks. It gives you guys in the warm regions something to do while we shovel snow. Glad to see you are out and about. Have fun!

Jim, our season ends the last day of this month. We have a really long late season.

We tried a field this afternoon that was absolutely wrapped up with doves earlier this week when I checked them. We had a really cold rain yesterday, and cloudy, cold weather today, and the birds were gone. Hundreds of them ......... just.... gone.
Very frustrating, but that's hunting.

Here's a shot of the Aguila box, and the shell head stampings:

That is an eagle's head stamp at 6 o'clock on the shell head. That must be their trade "symbol", it's on the shell box, too.

OBTW, if anyone wants to see closer pics of this 3E they can look back on p. 2 for a thread entitled L C Smith 3E.
