Date of SW manufacture

I recently acquired a Fox Sterlingwoth, 126522. According to a source on the internet, it was manufactured 1929-1930. Since it has Philly markings I assume it was made in 1929. Is that correct? Are factory letters available for this type of gun?

As I understand it, Savage Arms recently sent all the production cards to Cody and they will be providing letters in the future. The A.H. Fox Collectors Association, Inc. has photocopies of the cards for the graded guns A- to FE-Grade and dues paying members get one free lookup per year. Additional lookups for $25 via PayPal. Only a handful of production cards remain for 12-gauge guns below 9648 and those few that do are for cut-away guns that were used by salesmen and in displays. Also, the folks that got into Savage and made these photocopies back in 1991 only did the backs of the cards for no more than 10%.

Researcher/Dave Noreen pretty much summarizes how to get info on Fox shotguns.

His reference "to Cody" is the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Museum in Cody Wyoming. I believe it might be named something a little different now but that's what it was when I visited it several years ago.

They have the Fox/Savage records and they do the letters now. They also do Winchester, Marlin, L. C. Smith, Ithaca and possibly some others.

Great place to visit if you ever get out that way.

And if you do and have the time with a car, I would suggest you drive the road from Cooke City Montana to Cody. First time I did it with my wife it was dark, she was terrified. We did it again during daylight. It was wonderful. Do it both ways if you can. During daylight.

It was the Buffalo Bill Historical Center back in September 2003 --

When Kevin and I attended the RSA Seminar there. On the drive back to Billings for Kevin's flight back to Virginia, we went over Dead Indian Pass --

and then over the Beartooth --

and on to Red Lodge.

It was the Buffalo Bill Center of the West by the time I attended the 2014 RSA Seminar there. It has within it the Cody Firearms Museum, the McCracken Research Library, the Draper Natural History Museum, the Plains Indian Museum, the Buffalo Bill Museum and the Whitney Western Art Museum.

If anyone heads out to Cody take in Wild Bills Daughters Hotel and their breakfast buffet. Bit of history and the chow was pretty good also. You can certainly stay there as well. PS. The Cherrywood Back Bar is rather amazing to look at. The idea that is was shipped all the way from England as a gift to WB from Queen Victoria, which includes steamers, rail and ultimately by wagon is quite amazing for sure. Double PS. Yep, no doubt touristy stuff, but a lot of history mixed in as well.
