Stiff Sterly

Post by Fin2Feather »

My 12ga Sterlingworth is very stiff on opening and doesn't seem to want to open all the way; I typically have to pull down on the barrels to get the shells out. It's an extractor gun, Savage vintage. Any ideas/remedies? Thanks...

Might be the screw in the barrel lug that holds the extractor in place is screwed down too tight and is binding on the extractor stem. Or, it might just be dried up old grease in the action. I had that problem with a minty 1939-vintage drawbolt Sterlingworth when I got it.

It is better to have to push down on the barrels a bit to get the shells in and out, thus making sure the gun is cocked. With my Father's old VH Parker Bros. you could open it and get the empties out and new shells in without quite cocking the gun. I just this fall had Keith Kearcher clean the old gun up a bit and remedy that problem.
