The Super Fox I bought at the Vintagers made it out to my duck club today. Wind, rain and 39 degrees, classic duck day with a classic gun. Impressive on the ducks, 3 green heads, 1 black and two teal. Great first outing!!
Craig - perfect weather, nice gun, a fine bag, great memories! I had my SF out on Saturday and did okay too. Two mallards and a woodie. Wife has the camera on a trip; too wet for pics anyway. Frank
Craig nice outing looks like the old girl done well I have a super fox too but didn't go Saturday was in the smokey Mt with my girlfriend at a weeding anyway nice nice gun.
Well done Craig. I "debuted" my newly done HE/XE "De Shootinest Gent'man Special" a couple of weeks ago in Quebec. I shot it 2 of the 5 days we were up there. We had blue bird weather all week and the situation was perfect for an HE. Virtually all shots on big ducks were 45 yds+ on the pass. I got my limit with it both days but it was shooting a little lower for me than my pre-trip patterning had indicated. I have to admit the close shooting HE was a real handful on the large number of teal buzzing the blind and my success rate on those was "pretty po'" as Ho'ace Miller would have put it. I was using Federal Tungsten Polymer 1 3/8 oz of #4s. Upon my return, I sent it up to Mike Orlen for a bit of a bend up and it is now a confidence inspiring 1 3/8"x 1 7/8" with a bit more cast on. It will be with me on my annual trip to Beaver Dam in early December where pickin' 'em from the tops of the cypresses is often the norm.
I let the big ducks get out a bit since the chokes are so tight. I shoot 1 1/8oz handload bismuth #4's. Very clean kills, but no shots over 40 yards. The teal were like like rockets today flying on a 40mph wind. I got a double on teal with a 9lb 5oz gun. Once you get the old girl moving she doesn't stop!
Don, can we see pictures of the new HE/XE? Sorry, I have no Super Fox with duck pictures. Last year, I carried a Sauer ten bore after grouse in heavy cover. This year, I carried a zero frame Parker 16 of the same weight. The Super Fox seemed like a little much.
A great way to get your newly acquired HE 12 back to the business of bustin' up some mallards. You sure picked a heck of a day. Windier than all get out and a little on the cold side. At least no rain.
Thanks Bill. It rained like hell and the old girl got soaked. Thankfully we have a fully stocked gun cleaning station in our club house and I gave it a complete cleaning right after the hunt. Getting a gun wet never does any damage as long as it doesn't stay wet in a case. The forecast called for light showers but it poured driven by a 30+ mph wind.
Craig: The weather was just like the day you bought her---wet and windy. The ducks and the gun look great, I don't think that gun spent much time in those conditions over its life.
Thanks Ralph: She sure is in nice shape but not a closet queen. I plan to take it this Saturday but it appears the weather is going to be nice. Now I just need to find a few more so I don't wear this one out
