Fox A with Beavertail Front Stock

Post by KMc »

I have a Fox A 16ga s/n 3022xx. All of the serial numbers match. If my research is correct, the shotgun was manufactured in 1924. It has a beavertail front stock. Was the beavertail stock available in 1924?

A beavertail forearm was never cataloged by the A.H. Fox Gun Co. during the Philadelphia years. The first Fox catalog to offer beavertail forearms was the Savage issued catalog with the Lynn Bogue Hunt cover picture that was used from 1931 to 1934 --

and the January 15th, 1931, Wholesale Price List and the undated RETAIL PRICES that equates to it --

That said, there are a handful of Philadelphia era production cards which do call for beavertail forearms. I'd been playing in Fox doubles for over 40 years before I saw my first righteous Philadelphia era beavertail forearm. I see you have already requested the card in the Members Only Forum. Post some pictures of the gun including inside and outside the beavertail and we can give our thoughts on it.

Will do. The shotgun is off getting some minor mechanical and stock work. I took a few pictures before I sent it off

Nice work; looks like a front and back end restock to me.

From what I can see in those pictures, the gun has been restocked both stock and forearm. Looks like the stocker got very close to a Savage-Era Skeet or Field beavertail forearm --

I had questions based on anothe Fox A that I own (1923) with a splinter stock. Whoever did the stock work used decent wood and did an excellent fit on the recoil pad. I bought the shotgun to grouse and quail hunt so I'm very happy.

Thanks fot the help!!
