Just a little working gun

Post by vaturkey »

Got this gun last year at a local auction when I was about half dead from the Flu. Little Savage made 20 gauge with Philly features. Nice thing is it is 1 1/2" X 2 1/2" (comb and heel respectively) and weighs 5 lb 12 oz. Chokes are I guess still the way they came which is .014 and .026. Anyway, after following my little Sophie around for about 2 hours she finally locked up. Slid into the cover and out she came up through the brush and I knocked her down. Sophie made a super nice retrieve to hand. Large female. They have about left Va and that makes me sad. Love these little buggers.

I'll bet that is a sweet little gun, and I've often felt that Woodcock are truly beautiful birds. I had one mounted once, but it just didn't come out as good as the real thing. Maybe someday I'll try a better taxidermist. You said it was a female. Did you inspect it's anatomy, or use the "dollar bill" trick?

Magnifying glass and a pair of CVS readers. :) No, dollar bill trick. Their bills are a bunch longer then males for sure.

Yup! I was told that you can put a dollar bill in the bird bill. If the bird's bill is shorter than a dollar bill, it's a male. If the bird's bill is longer than the dollar bill (short side), it's a female.

Good job Tom! The MD season second half doesn't open until next Monday; so you know where I'll be! Canvasbacks are starting to move off the main Bay and up into our creek as of last weekend. Cans in the morning, 'doodles in the afternoon - someone has to do it! Kevin
