Recently Purchased Fox Sterlingworth 16 gauge

Post by Cflanagan »

I am brand new to the forum, but I recently purchase a 16 Ga Fox Sterlingworth. The guns Serial number is 350173. Is there an estimate of its production year?

The gun also does not have the traditional grip that i have seen on most Sterlingwoths. It is more rounded which is a shape that I have seen on graded Foxes but it still has the rougher Sterlingworth checkering. I am curious if this could be original or if it was most likely altered.

I will attach some images of the gun

Your Sterlingworth 16 is a first year of production gun. Approx 1913.

The stock is likely a replacement but the gun looks to be in fine condition.

Thanks for the info Jason,

The Barrels are marked Savage Arms Utica NY. "special Alloy Forged Steel". I thought that the company was transferred to Savage later on in the 30s. Does it make sense that the barrels are marked Utica NY instead of Philadelphia?

Very likely some previous owner sent this first year 16-gauge Sterlingworth to Savage for a new stock and fell victim to this policy --

though I would expect this style marking on the left side of the left barrel if that was the case --

Another possibility is these were a second set of barrels added to the gun. Is there a numeral 2 under the serial number on the barrel flats like this?

There is no #2 under the serial number on the barrels. I am wondering if this barrel swap along with the potential for a stock change makes a big difference in value? What would the estimated value be?
