SD pheasant opener

Out in SD with my son and some friends. Hunting a family farm birds are down this year but we shot well and came up two birds short on day one (13)and one bird short on day two (14). My son ran his 1 year old lab Roxie and she did a great job. Shot lights out with my Fox CE 20 20ga 26" it's been magic. Wind to hit 50 mph today so it will be challenging.

Strong wind today but a group of great shooters. Took all day but a limit of 15 birds. Great dog work only lost one. 20ga CE pictures below. Sweet gun.

Actually the family owns 4 properties. They raise cattle corn and beans. They plant sorghum strips for the birds and leave 40 rows of standing corn strips to hold birds until after the season. The strips are 1/2 miles long. Lots of walking 10 miles or so per day. We hunt dry potholes, standing crops and shelter belts. All day we flushed 20 cocks total including wild flushes and killed 15 birds some great shooting and dog work.

I remember hunting wild pheasants back in the 70's and early 80's in PA, MD, and NJ.

Someday I'd love to get out in the midwest to experience it again.

At least we still have grouse and woodcock.

This ground beats dogs up. One year old Roxie sliced up her chest on barbed wire. Normally they only hit barbed wire once in their life, labs learn fast. We vet tape the front paws to help with sand burrs on young dogs that have soft pads. Make sure your dogs are in top physical shape or they will break down after day one
That being said the dogs live to hunt.

Thanks for the pictures of Roxie, Craig. She is a pretty big dog for only 1 year old. Did you have to take her to a vet after the barbed wire Injury?
