Bobbed HE - Where are the 'Barrel Police'??
Bobbed HE - Where are the 'Barrel Police'??
Measured an otherwise very nice HE over the weekend that turned out to have 31 5/8" barrels; 4.25" of choke run to muzzle, miked .043" choke in both barrels, not marked as to chamber length, no "Barrels not guaranteed" stamp on flats. Muzzle keels missing. Didn't have "Frank Quality" precision chamber gauges so don't know if it's an original 2 3/4" gun or an original unmarked 3" or later factory or "home shop" extended chambers. Cards out to an original 32" barrel gun. Some case colors left and very good wood with appropriate figure and no cracks. How can we track down these guys and corner them for an explanation?? Inquiring waterfowlers need to know!! Kevin

Dropped barrels would be my guess, but geez. Is sure does seem to happen a lot to nice guns. Course dropping a set of 32" barrels on the ends probably caused a fair amount of damage as they sure are heavy.

3/8" bobbed off
and still 43 thousands choke
seems to be to be better than the full length barrels with the choke reamed out that you see so often

Usually a non factory and some factory lengthen chokes are the nominal factory spec diameter while the early HE chambers will be tighter. I have both factory early chambered guns and ones that I am sure were lengthen along the way. In this small sample, (6 guns 3 early factory) long as the chokes have not been messed with they pattern pretty much the same with the same diameter choke.

No doubt the barrel police have wet themselves and are tearing their clothes along with the butchered buttstock police.
Have the Fox choke designs been investigated? How long of a taper, how much parallel, differences between degrees of choke, shape or constriction changes over time, this sort of thing?

May have been Becker bored and 'tuned' so it might not fit any "Standard Boring" specification.kgb wrote:No doubt the barrel police have wet themselves and are tearing their clothes along with the butchered buttstock police.

Our man "Silvers" knows as much or more about Super-Fox bores, chokes and chambers than Chas. Askins the elder who was there at their birthing!!

I'm new to your site, but do have a Super-Fox and like it very much. It's a 32 inch, 2 3/4 chambered gun. I had the choke measured the other day...4.5" beginning at .745 even taper to .695, 50 points of constriction. The gun, according to the letter, was built in 1923. Is this typical choke constriction...doesn't appear to be obliquely angled and does not have parallel constriction, untapered section the last inch or so?

.050 and a full taper no parallel section is perfect. All my supers measure .050 to .053. I have a super that was factory bored to IM/F and it measures .036/.050. .745 bores are correct for a circa 1923 gun. My 28328 from that era measures .745/.747, .052/.052.

Thank you for information regarding muzzle choke on my Super. I saw that records indicate 948 to 950, 12 gauge Supers were made. Do we know how many still remain? How many members have Supers on this site? Is there a member site Super-Fox group? Is there a picture collection of Super-Foxes? Thanks for answering nimrod questions. Just love my Super!

Check out the members only forum and you will see a listing of all the articles published about Fox guns, a number of them are about SF's. If you obtain a copy of all the articles written about SF's you will have a very good working knowledge of them including many pictures. If you use the search function on this forum you will see many hits on SF topics. I own six of them and consider myself only mildly addicted
