Certainly is interesting reading. Strangely, he doesn't mention several popular guns: the Nitro Special for one, and the several Savage/Stephens doubles including the current offerings. He also doesn't mention any of the turn-of-the-century SxS's. But I'll start to look around for an H&R!

I think he was targeting what most folks calls as American Best Guns. He covered all of those except for Levefer, which many folks consider as the best of the American Best Guns.

The "big names" he left out are the Baker Gun & Forging Co. hammerless, the Lefever Arms Co. automatic hammerless and the Remington Arms Co., Hammerless Double. I would have liked to read his thoughts on those.

Of course if one really wanted to get into it, we'd need reviews of the guns made by the Tobin Arms Mfg. Co.; Baltimore Arms Co.; the American Arms Co. Whitmore hammerless double; Philadelphia Arms Co.; Wilkes-Barre Gun Co.; Torkelson; the hammerless doubles made by Clark & Sneider, later just Sneider; and Colts Patent Fire-Arms Manufacturing Co. Model 1883.

Then maybe the lower end guns, the various J. Stevens Arms & Tool Co. and J. Stevens Arms Co. guns, the Lefever Nitro Special, Western Arms Co. Long Range Double, Forehand Arms Co. later made by Hopkins & Allen Arms Co., Iver Johnson, Hunter Arms Co.'s Fulton and Hunters, The W.H. Davenport Fire Arms Co. and I'm sure there are some more I haven't thought of. Of course there are also all those "trade branded" guns produced by H & D Folsom Arms Co. NYC, at their factory in Norwich, Conn. also known as Crescent Fire Arms Co.

Sorry guys. I didn't mean to start a p....ing contest. I guess I missed the "best gun" concept. I am certainly NOT qualified to judge the merit of a gun's design. It was interesting to read the comments even though I am not familiar with some of the guns he mentions. It would be fun, I think, to read comments about the same guns written from a different point of view. At least for the entertainment value.

Keep in mind that Dewey chose 2 Fox SW 12's to build custom guns for a friend of mind. I do know that he is fond of Foxes.
