Gun Slings

Post by Seawolf72 »

I do not want use a swivel mounted gun sling on my Sterlingworth. As a waterfowl hunter I need both hands to carry decoys etc. to the blind. What solutions to this problem have others found?

There are soft cases on the market with shoulder slings (straps).

I think one of these might be the ticket if you want to be able to sling it over your shoulder and carry it with no case. I've used them on my Sterly while turkey hunting.

The above slings will work well for that. It is exactly the system I use for duck hunting, but mine is handmade of soft leather on the ends and a braided type material for the strap part. The thing I like about these, over a soft case, is that when you get where you're going, in my case it's usually crotch deep in a beaver pond, you just slip it off and stick it in a jacket or wader pocket. Hard to find a place to put a soft case, sometimes.

Here is a picture of it on my HE Fox, and a link to the fellow that makes and sells them, The Leatherman. He's a very nice fellow, and straight up.

If you go to his website take time to look through the possibles bags he makes, too. They are very high quality, and beautiful. In regards the sling, look at the "Universal Sling".

Hope this helps, SRH

I have a 32" DHE Parker with sling swivels. I probably wouldn't have bought it except for the swivels. It was a rust bucket and priced more than I wanted to pay. However, we negotiated down to $1500.00 and the gun cleaned up nicely.

I have not as yet found a need for a sling, but if I do it will be one of the removable ones. Stan, I like the looks of that one. Whenever I see a double shotgun with swivels and a sling I think of those Tyrolean hats and lederhosen :D .

Vaturkey and Stan nailed it! That is exactly what I was picturing in my mind but did not know how to describe it or search for it.

Either of you got ideas on lottery numbers?

Stan,

Is there elastic or something else on the front loop area to keep it tight around the barrels? Trying to figure if this would work for a 20 gauge or just slide up off the barrels because it would be too loose.

No, Tom, he makes them to fit the barrel size. Just give him a call or an email and tell him what you want and he will make it.

Really accommodating guy. Anybody coming to the Southern could prolly call him for a special order now and have it delivered there. Just my guess.

Thanks Stan,

I've also got a stalking Mannlicher Rifle that doesn't have sling studs and this looks like that would work for this as well. I'll give him a buzz. May order two of them. Appreciate the info.

I have used that sling and find that tight on the barrel or not, it will not extend to the muzzle while in use. I don't like them because they obstruct the sighting plane unless you remove the sling. I leave my slings on the barrels while in the blind. I also have a mag ten NID with factory sling swivels. They should all be so equipped.

I agree with you, Bill, about having to remove it before shooting. I could probably learn to ignore it and shoot with it on the gun, but it is worrisome in my line of sight down the rib. Not a problem for me tho', as I only need the sling while sloshing to and from the hole or blind, toting decoys and other paraphernalia. I hate the way sling swivels look on a shotgun, so it works just right for me.

I have no use for a sling inside the blind, so a case with a sling is the way to go. Easy to remove the gun, no hassles. Protects the gun while carrying awkward loads. And it floats!

If I'm going to have to wade in or take a boat, I wouldn't consider not having my gun in a floating case regardless of whether it is a Superfox, Win 21 Duck or a Remington 870 Express. Even if I don't completely drop the gun I've had to clean out water and muck too many times after stumbling with my hands full of gear and dunking a gun before I learned this lesson!

On the other hand, that's a great looking sling Stan. I'm going to order one for dove, crow and turkey hunting when I'm on dry land. Thanks for the tip.

On a moose hunt in Ontario, my Ruger 77 7mmMag somehow slipped into a bottomless lake while exiting a canoe. The gun sunk like a rock, but the sling formed into a rainbow, just inches after the gun. I reached into the water as far as I could, up to or beyond my shoulder. Somehow I was able to snag the sling and the gun was rescued.
