I attended a small gun show this morning and picked up this full box for $5.00. I have an HE and a CE that Savage re chambered at some point for 2 3/4" and have always used such shells in both of them without much concern. I don't do a lot of shooting and so have also used the 2 3/4" with light loads in my shorter chambered foxes as well. I've never really sought out the new 2 1/2" RST shells written about so often in these forums or the older vintage stuff I stumbled upon today, but just couldn't pass on this box full. Does anyone know about when Remington stopped making these?
Some foxes were present at the show as well, saw two early 12 guage A's, 1decent original condition, 1 much rougher with a poorly cut stock and terrible fitted pad, and a smattering of Sterly's in 12 and 16. I think most all were priced appropriately (IMHO), but I didn't see anything I couldn't live without.

Nice purchase! At that price it's just fun to have the box kicking around.
Shoot vintage firearms, relax, and have fun.

Re: Remington 2 5/8" shells
The 2 5/8 inch 12-gauge shells and the 2 1/2 inch 20- and 28-gauge shells from our North American ammunition companies don't seem to have survived WW-II. The 2 5/8 inch 12-gauge shells and some 2 1/2 inch 20-gauge shells still appear in 1946 Remington, Western, and Peters ammunition catalogs, but are gone by 1947.
The red and green boxes replaced the old cream colored boxes used from 1934 to 1939 by 1940. Your box is from the 1940 to 1946 time frame.
The folded (pie) crimp began appearing on 2 3/4 inch trap and skeet loads circa 1939 --
but didn't appear on the Western Super-X, Winchester Super-Speed, Remington Express and Peters High-Velocity hunting loads until 1947/8.

Re: Remington 2 5/8" shells
Thank you for the info. The guy selling them thought they were 1970's era. I'm not really up to speed on my ammunition history but was pretty sure these shells were a bit earlier than that.
Jeff S, that was my thought as well, can't go wrong with that asking price.
