Recoil Pads

Post by Jeff S »

I'm in the market for a couple of new "recoil pads" and I would welcome some advice. Currently, one of my guns, a 12 gauge Sterlingworth, has a rubber recoil pad with 7 diagonal slots (see the included picture). Are recoil pads like this still available? Does anyone know where to find this one?

While searching online, I've noticed several recoil pads, but nothing that matches this one. I like the looks of the Hawkins diamond heart pattern, but I've also found pads that are solid (Noshoc), perpendicular slots (Hawkins) and parallel slots (Jostam Hy-gun). Is there one in particular that is most "authentic"? Jeff

Wish they were. :)

That's the Jostam Anti-Flinch pad and they are not available anywhere. You on occasion can find them a gun shows but they are few and far between. PS. One in 16/20 gauge sold on Ebay about a year ago in the box new for over $200. The small bore ones are just about impossible to find.

Just the add, but this is what you are looking for/at:

Tom, thanks for the feedback. Since the chances of finding an exact replacement are slim, I've placed an order for a Hawkins "diamond heart" pattern. The price was reasonable and I think it will look nice. If you are considering one more grouse hunt in Michigan, let me warn you, the snow is getting deep.

I've got one of those pads on my 30" Sterly 16 gauge that looks period correct. Nice pad if one can't find the Anti-Flinch for sure.

JeffS,

You have to be careful with the Hawkins' reproductions as they are rather large and if your gunsmith aligns the screw holes at the top together your pad will be very off center and you will have hearts in the toe of your pad. I have seen this happen way too many times, even when they are centered well they get that way on some guns.

Thanks for the tip. That's the sort of thing that I wouldn't know. I'll discuss it with him, and if it's a problem, I'll try something else.

If it was mine, I would consider a Silvers pad. I like the way Silvers pads look and any number of gunsmiths can install one correctly without too much trouble or cost.

I agree with Mills. I too like the Silvers pads. I also like the NoShock. Both pads will work nicely and spruce up a gun. I actually put 2 NoShock pads on 2 of my small bores after I refinished them instead of using the original HRBP. They needed a bit mor LOP and the pads did the trick.

Mills and Mike, the Hawkins was way too large for my stock, so I asked the gunsmith to install a Silvers. Thanks for the advice. Jeff
