16ga Fox Sterlingworth - Front Bead Questions

Post by BradCO »

Well, I should have known the 20ga Fox Sterlingworth could not be the only one in the stable. I tried to resist, but stumbled across a decently priced 1920 16ga Sterlingworth, 28" with #3 barrels that weighs under 6 pounds. The wood stock looks to have been refinished, but it will be a field gun and maybe I'll restock at some point. The barrel metal bluing was very good and case colors in the lower range but good shape.

Mechanically the only bubba-gunsmithing job was the front bead. Along the years it looks like someone broke or tried to remove the front sight and added a second bead behind the original. I'm not sure if the newer rear sight is pressed in or threaded. Is the original sight typically threaded it?

What would be an acceptable method of repair?
1)Try to clean up the front bead hole and re-install a bead. And then plug the rear hole? I figured I could spot face the front bead area and re-drill/tap for the OEM bead style. The rear hole area is smaller in damage so it would need a plug and blue touch up. I doubt I would get the rib pattern to match but could spend some time handwork it.
2)Just leave it alone and use the rear bead?

It will be a field gun, but I'd like to replace the bead with a slightly larger one.

Thanks again, and with this second purchase I joined the Collector's Club. I figured a Graded Fox it probably to hard to resist down the road. - Brad
