I joined the forum about three months ago. I purchased a 16 gauge side by side A.H. Fox shotgun from a friend. I have all the serial numbers and codes for the gun. I read about John T. Callahan, Arms Historian of Southampton, MA in this forum. I sent him a check for $45 to get a factory assessment on March 5, 2016. He has yet to respond to my request.
About my gun. The serial number is 301409. The grade stamp is "A" The barrel weight is "3". I'd like to get some idea of the history of this gun and it's possible value. I will try to post some pictures of the gun, but as I'm new to the forum, I have not yet figured that out.
Not much to tell but you have a nice 16ga Fox A grade. It appears as if the case colors were lightly polished as the action is bright.
The checkering on the forend appears as if may have been lightly sanded as the diamonds appear flatter than normal and are not consistent in color. But it is very hard to evaluate a gun from pictures. I would classify your gun as a solid shooter of much interest to the folks that hunt. But I would say your gun has little collector appeal due to it's average condition. Value can be determined by searching the various internet gun auction sites for like examples that actually sold. I would write John C a note about your letter as he normally gets letters out in 6-8weeks. Craig Larter
Glad you were able to get the pictures posted. Looks like a nice honest A Grade 16ga extractor gun. How long are the barrels, and do you have an idea of the choke constriction? As Craig said, value is hard to determine without the gun in hand, but you could get a good idea of what people are asking for them by checking out sites like Guns International, Guns America or Gunbroker. Keep in mind these are asking prices, not what people are actually getting for the gun in many cases. Value is all about condition and usually originality. I've seen a fair amount listed in the $3,00 to $4,000 range in good condition.
I love a 16ga, carries like a 20 and shoots like a 12!

"Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks." - Thomas Jefferson
Nice gun from what I can see. I'll add that the 6th pic makes it look like the lever is too far right. If that's the way it actually rests when the gun is snapped closed, someone probably did work on the bolting system. And if so, I'd suggest getting that redone so it's just a tad right of center. Also, maybe it's just the angle of the 3rd pic but the front forend screw seems to lack the factory crosshatching on the end of its shank. If so it was probably replaced.
A quick way to obtain info on your gun is to join the AHFCA and then request a copy of the factory card for your gun, which usually only includes the front of the factory card, but for some guns both sides of the card are available from the AHFCA.
Check out the AHFCA Home Page on how to join and the many benefits, which includes 1 free card check per year and access to Members Only forum where Fox guns are discussed in more detail and guns/parts are listed for sale:
