Waterfowling on James Bay, anyone there lately?

Post by Silvers »

Have any fellow board members done any waterfowling on James Bay (Ontario - southern part of Hudson Bay) in recent years? I did some trips near Moosonee and also Fort Albany some years ago and am considering organizing one for interested Fox gunners this fall. I have all the previous contact information but would like to consider more recent hunt experiences. Please reply here or send me a PM with any details you'd like to share. Thanks. Silvers

Frank,
That sounds interesting. Would that be September or October.

I was thinking of seeing if anyone was interested in Beaverdam.

September seems to be best for the mixed bag. Snows, blues, cans, redheads, GWT, some others. Frank

Silver: I could be wrong but most of the waterfowl hunting in the James Bay area is shut down. The Canadian Government required native people to run the concessions and it only took them a few years to screw the whole thing up. I have not heard of anyone going to James Bay in the last 10 years. Western Canada is the place to go if you want to hunt in September. Ducks, huns and sharptails and great people that like Americans. Early October go to North Dakota, later S Dakota and Montana.

Rats! I hadn't heard that. On second thought the outfitter we used in the past was a native. His young son was helping out at the time, possibly he's running the hunting today. I'll check it out. I do know a waterfowl and upland outfitter in Saskatchewan. But he's always booked up. I can probably get two slots but a group is definitely out.

North Dakota is good.
In 2005 I went with Dave Gruber (aka the General)
filming Benalli's Bird Hunting America. I think there were 6 of us not counting the guides. We shot a limit of lesser Canadas and a few Sandhills before lunch. A limit of Pheasants and some pickup sharptails after lunch. A limit of ducks in the late afternoon That was for 3 day's running.

That was the middle of October.

Just a thought
