It's been a difficult season and today was the last day for me, our season closes tomorrow. I did take some nice mallards with the Super Fox today.
Hugh numbers of ducks in central NY but very hard to finish. I know it sounds like BS but I bet I saw 3000 mallards today---- but they all were dumping into corn, wanted nothing to do with our marsh.
So get ready you duck hunters to the south, the birds are on there way.
Craig, from all the reports of "lake effect" snow, I would have thought the corn fields would have been covered so the Mallards could not get to the waste grain. But in your photo, there is no snow!

PS - like the Filson hunting clothes.
Goodbye Mandy, once in a life time hunting dog. I miss you every day.
You better bring Lucy and the Super-Fox and come out here. Our Duck season goes to 25 January 2015. Better stop by the Credit Union first and take out a loan as the Washington State non-resident hunting license is usurious!!
Craig, nice birds and I'm glad you sent the ducks south. We needem down here. Our season opened last Thursday but due to work, family, and no big ducks I've not ventured into the swamp at my club just south of Yazoo City, MS. Could have gone and shot a limit of 3 woodroes but may go for that this weekend if the "fever" kicks into overdrive.
Question: Is your marsh shooting passing or decoyed birds?
Mike: Our marsh is a northern cattail marsh part of the Montezuma wetlands complex. The Montezuma complex which includes a Federal Refuge, NYS Wildlife Areas and private duck clubs encompasses about 40,000 acres. It sits on the north end of Cayuga Lake, one of the beautiful Finger Lakes. Our duck club is 1400 acres, about 900 in cattail marsh. Our hunting is all decoying ducks. The Federal Refuge keeps expanding so the birds have plenty of safe areas. The Feds just purchased 700 acres on our south border for $2.4 million!!! It has made our hunting difficult since the birds just hold in the refuge areas. We boat out to small pot holes (open water) and normally set 1 to 2 dozen decoys. Here is a picture of our typical habitat.
Thanks Craig. Looks like a nice club with some good holes. Here's a photo of what my club looks like. All flooded timber, mostly cypress. If the water is deep we paddle out to the hole (about 40 yds from where the photo was taken) in a john boat, set the decoys, then drop off at a tree. If not we wade out to the hole. Good waders and a sturdy wading pole are a must for this club!
Mike: beautiful spot the kind Nash would have loved! !!! I went to Arkansas last year to hunt the flooded timber and it was a bust. Some day I would love to have a lights out timber hunt. My super fox in the timber taking a few talk ones. Yes! !!!

Nice picture. Wearing that traditional brown coat with only the top button buttoned I would swear that I'm looking at Mr. President in the old Gordon MacQuarrie books. However, Mr. President always carried an auto.
