Are these really case colors?

Post by gwsmith »

Was looking at this gun today described as original with 98% case colors. Looks more like rust to me. Are these really "normal" case colors - if so the strong orange streaking looks odd.

There is some case color there but just as much patina. No way does that gun come anywhere close to 98% case colors!!

Sometimes bad lighting and photography makes things look worse, but 98% is a stretch in my opinion.

Thanks Craig - quite a bit of difference between the 2 guns. I'm not sure I'd call the top gun 50% case colors.

I have bought a Fox from Jay, but sometimes he gets a little carried away with descriptions (and prices, IMO).

It probably has about 90% of the case surface hardening remaining but it appears only about 20% of the colors.

Jay is a good guy in my opinion and comes up with some really great stuff. I agree he is ambitious with his evaluation of the subject gun's case colors.
Jay had a 32" 16ga Sterlingworth at this years Vintagers that was a true 99% gun. It was sold to a client on the phone but a dozen of us pleaded with him to sell us the gun.

Just curious. What does a 99% 32" Sterlingworth 16 gauge go for these days? And yes, because I have to ask I know I can't afford it.
