Savage Fox barrel wall standards

Post by JNW »

I asked about lengthening the chambers on my 20 gauge Sterlingworth on the collector forum and someone posted a document from Savage about how they analyzed Philly barrels returned to them for work. If the barrels passed their wall thickness test they would lengthen the chambers. Anyone have any idea what their standards for wall thickness were?
Thanks,
Jeff

I believe that after lengthening the chamber the barrels were proof fired. I don't ever remember any reference to measuring chamber or barrel wall thickness.

First they measured for thickness then if they passed the thickness test they then rechambered if necessary and proofed at owners risk.

Morning,

What exactly was an "electronic test" back in the 1930's. Curious of what procedures were followed and what constituted a pass/fail?

The above was scanned from a 1966 dated repair list. I've seen the same sheet attached to a repair list dated a decade earlier. Don't know when they first started it.

So, we have no idea what wall thickness they considered safe? How about folks who have guns measure them so we can compare original, short chambered guns with altered barrels and later 2 3/4" barrels? I will get the thickness on my short chambered gun measured. Having some real data in our hands will help clarify this issue.
Thanks,
Jeff
