Compass in the stock?

Post by Fin2Feather »

Someone on another board posted that they have a c. 1923 16ga Sterlingworth with a compass inlaid in the end of the pistol grip. I would assume this was done aftermarket; did the factory ever do this?

It was very rare but Fox did employ a third party contractor to handle the installation. I believe for a time, he lived with Burt Becker?? I have seen a few cards noting this most special, custom order feature, the most famous of which shipped to the individual below, in Terre Haute, IN.

There was a local Hardware / Sporting goods shop here in my area that offered to install a compass in the stock with each gun purchase. They charged for it, but it seemed to be a popular option. I never saw one on a shotgun stock but there are allot of Winchester M71, M70 rifles around here with them. They seem to be a Marbles brass type compass. They do turn off most collectors but were probably a real convenience for the initial buyer.
