2014 Bo-Whoop & WC Letterman Cup Winners

Post by Silvers »

This announces our 2014 winners of the Bo-Whoop Long Range Championship and our W C Letterman Cup (SBT) event.

We are pleased to announce that Mike Campbell of western NY is our 2014 Bo-Whoop Champion. Mike came away from the shooting stand with 8 ex 10 targets, thrown from a mix of three traps. Mike was shooting his custom 32-inch 12 ga Sterlingworth and had a long run of 6 birds. This is the third B-W win for Mike in seven years of running our Championship shoot! Of note, Dave DeFernelmont of southeastern PA tied with Mike for high score of 8 ex 10, and also with long run of 6 birds. Dave was shooting his 32-inch Winchester 21 in 12 ga - which is ineligible for the B-W Champion recognition. This year we had (6) shooters with scores of 8 ex 10. At present we are working out the purse payouts for all the places.

Our 2014 Lady Champ is Connie Nielsen of western PA who was fielding a 12 gauge Fox A Grade.

Unfortunately we did not have any Youth shooters in 2014. :(

The William C Letterman Cup SBT event was won by J D Shank of eastern PA - using a 12 ga L C Smith SBT gun - with a score of 8 ex 10.

The AHFCA Directors extend a sincere "thank you" to all who participated in the For-Score and Practice shooting. Additional details on the place cuts will be available once they are worked out. Full details on the shoot will be written up in the AHFCA Fall Newsletter. Again, we extend our sincere congrats to all the winners for their "Excellence in Long Range Shooting".

Sincere THANKS to Silvers/Frank Srebro; Toolman/Steve Cambria; Foxist/Paul Plunkett; Jim Malone; Mady, the pretty score keeper and the trap operator who I'm ashamed I did not introduce myself to. And the others too who helped with signups, scoring and their enthusiastic encouragement.

All the shooters too.

And congratulations to the winners. Nice shooting!

It was a Great Weekend.

This post addresses the payouts for the AHFCA Bo-Whoop and W C Letterman Cup SBT shooting events held last weekend at the Northeast SxS at Hidden Hollow.

The Fox staffers who were responsible for both shoots during the last hour or so of the competitions were overloaded with shooters. Then they had limited time to determine the B-W and the WCL Cup Champions, get pictures of them, and pay some of the winners who were starting to leave for home. Complicating all this was that we had (six) shooters who achieved scores of 8 ex 10 at the B-W targets. Unfortunately during that short time period some incorrect assumptions were used on how to do the long-run tie breakers. Thus the first-second-third place cuts that should have been made by “public draw of name” were not done on Saturday. In addition, some of the score cards were not properly entered on the Master Sheets and our Lady Champion who was paid on Saturday, was shortchanged by a small amount. Another shooter was paid in error.

Since then we have double-checked all the score cards. The Fox BOD’s have discussed this and have decided on the following solution - which will increase our payouts and reduce our net, but we believe is the right thing to do:

Bo-Whoop Long Range Championship
Mike Campbell and Dave DeFernelmont both achieved scores of 8 ex 10, and both had long runs of 6 birds. A public draw was supposed to determine the 1st and 2nd place purses but a draw was not done on Saturday. Therefore the AHFCA will pay both shooters (by check) the same % amount for concurrent 1st place wins. This will eliminate the 2nd place payout.

Britton Condon and J D Shank both achieved scores of 8 ex 10, and both had long runs of 5 birds. A public draw was supposed to determine the 3rd place purse, which would have eliminated one of these shooters from being paid. Therefore the AHFCA will pay both shooters (by check) the same % amount for concurrent 3rd place wins.

Our Lady Champion Connie Nielsen will be receiving a supplemental check based on the actual number of for-score shooters.

Please note that none of this will affect the naming of our 2014 Bo-Whoop Champion. Mike Campbell is this year’s Champion with his outstanding score of 8 ex 10 with a long run of 6 birds, using an Ansley H Fox design shotgun.

W C Letterman Cup SBT gun event
J D Shank is our W C Letterman Cup Champion with a score of 8 ex 10. J D was properly paid on Saturday.

Larry Frey and Paul Plunkett both achieved scores of 6 ex 10, and both had long runs of 3 birds. A public draw was supposed to determine the 2nd and 3rd place purses but a draw was not done on Saturday. Therefore the AHFCA will pay Larry and Paul the same % amount for concurrent 2nd place wins. Paul is a Fox BOD member and he has graciously donated his purse back to the AHFCA. Thank you Paul

The AHFCA BOD’s sincerely apologize to all of the winners for the confusion on the payouts, and will take steps to preclude anything like this happening next year.

PS I was at a graduation party for a close family member during the late afternoon on Saturday and thus I don't have any pics of the awards etc. Some of the other guys will post them when they have time.

A question for the BOD: Was this years event below par? It seems that way because noone is discussing or posting photos of the event or of the 3 days participating. Jim

No Jim, actually quite the contrary. Silvers and his team utilized a 3rd trap this year and comments from the shooting fraternity have been overwhelmingly positive. Unfortunately, due to the unusually perfect weather ( Hidden Hollow has a long history of rain-soaked events) and the running of the Fox vs. Parker Challenge, by the time the BW concluded, there were very few people left in the area. Paul Plunkett was able to round-up two or three of the winners but is having some technical problems retrieving the images from his disk. I promise as soon as they are made available we will post for all to view. Like they say down at the sugar house, we poured 90 gallons of sap into a 20 gallon bucket on Fri & Sat.....frenetic to say the least!!! Thanks-----SC

This was the most successful Hausmanns weekend ever. I hope members appreciate the amount of work that goes into this event. We get some fantastic help from a dedicated group of members each year. BUT it takes members stepping up to the table and volunteering time. We would all like to see more pictures and posts but the current volunteers are maxed out unless others become actively involved. It can be discouraging for me when we have to beg for help and newsletter articles. Craig Larter

Not to worry, C-Note. The 2015 Hausmann's event will be run in a decidedly different manner. Most everyone comes to these events wanting only to 'play' and expecting that all the work is accomplished with the wave of a magic wand. NEWSFLASH!! Next year we will be instituting sign-up sheets with names and time slots. "What's measured gets done," everything else is DOO-DOO. The Bo-Whoop is our largest fund-raising event of the year and frankly we need more membership support to facilitate its operation. We cannot and will not continue down this path. FINIS.

Toolman,

OK, I'm guilty as charged. I was there Saturday and spent the day working a deal and then shooting. I had a gun that needed attention and my Fox project was at a standstill and I got a needed fitting, then I spent time with my engraver and then had to go.

I had my grade 4E 20 gauge LC Smith looked at. Dan Rossiter needs to arca glass the head of the stock as there were hairline cracks behind the back edge of the sideplates. So he kept it and will be doing the needed work. (He now has 4 guns of mine)

Then I shot the course and the Bo-Whoop challenge. If you combined my practice round and my official score I still would not have been in the running at the Bo-Whoop. I need to get out more and practice.

It got fun towards the end of the day. John Hossford really wanted my Manufrance Ideal 10 gauge and wanted to trade me a Francotte for it. I saw a Doug Turbull restored WC Scott Premier hammerless 12 gauge in Mark's Born Again Bird Gun truck. So when the dust settled, Mark had the Francotte, a set of Hossfords gauges and a pile of my cash, John Hossford got the Manufrance and I got the Scott. It took about an hour of dickering but that was the fun part. They both are great guys and we got it done. We had a celebratory beer together afterwards before I hit the road.

Dan Rossiter should start to make some progress with my gun now. We were able to take some measurements that he was waiting for. I hope he gets into it soon. Geoffroy Gournet is also extremely nice. We had some long discussions about my project. Jason Barden was also there. I got my extra set of 16 gauge barrels from him, I might also pick up another set from him. I'm thinking about it.

Anyway, It was a great time and I hope to see you all again sometime.

And next year maybe I'll come up for the weekend and be able to volunteer some. If it was not for other commitments, there is no other place I'd rather be.
