Only three weeks and counting to the F-P Challenge Match at the Northeast SxS. I hope our Foxers who will be there, are starting to tune up on your home clays courses. Here's a Fox 12 gauge SPE that was out yesterday. She's a 26-incher but did very well, coming in second place on the squad of seven guys. The other six were long barreled o/u's and gas guns. Just the thing for the grouse target part of HH's course. Not my SPE but she might be coming my way on a trade deal. Owner said OK to post the pic.
This is the first iPhone pic I've posted on a website. Great resolution and getting close to my Canon!

What series is the SPE? Nice looking gun, a few more fotos would be nice, perhaps after you acquire this later series Fox?? Are the over/unders allowed at some of the doublegun clays events as well as the side-by-sides? I have been trying out a L.L. Bean model O/U 12 gauge, a Rizzini with 28" barrels and 5 screw-in choke tubes. Have been shooting some respectable scores with it on 50 bird SC events, once I learned to use a Trap Handicap load of 7 & 1/2 lead shot for the rabbits, and a 1& 1/8 ounce load of No. 9 lead shot for the battues. If only the price of powder and shot would drop-
The Fox SP (SPE = ejector) was its own Grade. It had a flat-sided blued frame without the typical Fox pointed side panels, and in some respects was similar to Winchester's Model 21. Also, its breech balls/fences were profiled deeply and the sighting rib stands out as it does on X and higher Grade Foxes. I don't own this SPE and have no other pics at present. Before someone asks, this one seems to be choked about IC and tight Mod, a nice combo imo.
The Northeast SxS at Hidden Hollow is basically set up for side-by-side shotguns. I can't say I've never seen a gent with an over/under out on the courses but that's only for random shooting and scores don't apply toward the events. Plus, shooters with over/unders will probably get some good-natured sideways glances. All the other dedicated SxS events I've been at have been set up much the same.
Gents, it's time to get out and burn some powder in prep for your qualification for the F-P Challenge, our Bo-Whoop Long Range shoot, and the W C Letterman Cup if you have or can borrow a vintage SBT gun!

The SP-/SPE-Grade was introduced by Savage during the summer of 1932.
The early SP-/SPE-Grade guns were severly plain --
In that Savage used the same A.H. Fox retail catalogue for 1931 to 1934, the new SP-/SPE-Grade was only pictured in the illustrated Wholesale/Retail Price Lists for 1933 and 1934. In the 1934 Illustrated Wholesale/Retail price list, Savage introduced a Skeet version --
By the time the SP-/SPE-Grade appeared in the 1935 A.H. Fox retail catalogue, they had gotten a bit of engraving --
and the Skeet & Upland Game Gun version got a lot of engraving --
