X "special" 30" 16/20 2 barrel set

Post by MilRob »

A fellow fox enthusiast bbman3 gave me the opportunity to purchase this gun from him and I couldn't be more pleased with the gun. Picked it up tonight and to say I am happy with it would be a huge understatement. His stock work is top notch.

Impressive how good cell phone pictures can be with the right lighting and background. :)

Gun was built from all new old stock parts except one sear that was used. Bbman3 did the stock work himself and I would say he rivals some of the best. I have not seen as many restocked guns as most but it is definitely the nicest I have had the chance to handle. He also did some of the metal shaping. Bill Schwarz did some of the work but I don't know who he used for case colors. The engraver was Gerry Temperly I think.

Bill has the capabilities of doing Case Colors himself. He totally redid a Parker for me about 10 years ago. He no doubt did the barrel rust blueing as well and I know he checkers as well.

Did you do the checkering, too, Bobby? Very nice job on the restock. I knew you were capable of it but hadn't seen that one.

Bobby, I refinish a lot of vintage shotguns with a friend, he finishes with a satin spray from Brownells. I'm refinishing my Sterly 16 with 4-5 coats of linseed oil to fill grain and then a few coats of tung oil or a Tru oil diluted with lighter fluid. Will this give me the same looking finish as yours? If I may ask, what did you use?
thanks, Chris AZ

I never thought of that Bobby. I usually recut the checkering, mask it off and then sand and rub in the linseed. How many coats do you sand in? Do you apply the last few coats without sanding/ I've sanded 4 coats of linseed in on mine already, the grain is pretty much filled. I may rub in a couple of coats with the Dembart to seal it. I have an early Stery 12 I'm doing next, I think I'm going to try your method. Your work is just beautiful!
thanks again, Chris.........Tempe, AZ
