short chambers

What are the advantages/disadvantages of lengthening chambers or lengthening forcing cones? Is either one preferred with #4 barrels?.........DEN

Denny Seems for a time everyone wanted long cones and 2 3/4 inch chambers. Now they buy 2 /1/2 inch shells and leave the chambers alone. Bobby :D

RST ammo is readily available by mail order and doesn't cost anymore or in some case is cheaper then most regular factory ammo. I have left all my Foxes at the original chamber length. Maybe when I'm gone someone will extend the chambers, but I'll keep them as is. Now, I'll change chokes unless the gun has high condition/high value.

I am a duck hunter. I l-o-v-e Tungsten-Matrix. Have been using 16ga 2 3/4" 5`s and 6`s in lengthened chambers with very few cripples.[ Not so much so with Nice shot.] Am considering buying a 2 3/4" long barrel 16 that has lengthened forcing cones. Seems to me there shouldn`t be any difference....Is there?

Maybe I should just ask this: how much pressure is too much in 16ga barrels of #4 weight?.....and does it make any difference if barrels were originally 2 9/16"?......DEN

From the research I have seen on testing chamber pressures on vintage shot shells they were in the 9500psi range. I keep my loads at or under that pressure and do not exceed 1 ounce of shot and a muzzle velocity of 1200fps which keeps recoil in the moderate range. Even at that shot weight and moderate muzzle velocity I did have a one gun develop a crack in the web of the buttstock. A good glass bedding would have stopped that and save some repairs so now I have glass bedded all of the guns that I hunt with.
