119 Pounds of VINTAGE American Fields f/s at the Southern

Post by Silvers »

I am selling my collection of the American Field that spans the golden era of American SxS shotguns - from 1903 to 1913 - to include about 471 issues weighing about 119 pounds. FOR SALE at the Southern only. I will not bring them with me unless sold in advance. All these issues are stored in (three) cardboard boxes each measuring about 18” by 12.5” by 12”.

This collection was found in a barn in New England about six years ago and I’ve kept them in cardboard boxes and in a temp/humidity controlled environment. Most all of them are in excellent condition, some few have some water staining here and there, and a very-very few have insect damage on the edges. The copyrights have long expired and this is an opportunity for you gun historians and desktop publishers to do some scanning and put out your own compilations, articles or books.

In recent years the American Field evolved into more of a field trial magazine, but in the early 1900’s it was a weekly paper for sportsmen and filled with adverts from contemporary gun makers such as Parker, Baker, Hunter Arms, Ithaca, Stevens, Lefever, Philadelphia Arms, A H Fox, etc. Foreign makers were also showing their guns. And the powder and shotshell manufacturers were also actively advertising. Read exciting accounts of the Westy Hogan, the Cast Iron medal, the GAH Championships, regional trap and live bird shoots; along with info on period gun and ballistic technology like choke boring theory, Krupp and Whitworth steel barrels, powder and ammo developments, small bore versus large bore, etc. Pages are filled with the exploits of legendary shooters like Gilbert, Heikes, Capt Bogardus, Shattuck, Coleman, Crosby, Kautzky, Sousa, Annie Oakley, Elliott etc. Also included are otherwise unpublished articles by Askins, Capt A W DuBray, Capt Money, A P Curtis, Buckingham - to name a few. The papers also include sections, articles and stories related to Industry news, Hunting, Fishing, Trap and Live bird shooting, Dog trials, Rifle shooting, gun making, etc.

Here’s the count I have. Please note I may be off by plus/minus a few issues either way.

1903 – 7
1904 – 46
1905 – 48
1906 – 46
1907 – 52
1908 – 46
1909 – 49
1910 – 48
1911 – 45
1912 - 51
1913 – 33

Again, I will carry this collection to the Southern only if I have a firm presale that I can count on. I’ve seen individual issues of the early American Field selling for $10-15.00 apiece on E Bay. I’m asking $1600.00 for this collection of 471 +/- issues that weigh about 119 pounds. Cash only please. If interested please send me a PM. First come sale basis.
